Abstract

One of the most serious public health problems in the United States, as well as worldwide, is human trafficking. This criminal activity affects over 25 million adults and children worldwide annually (Olivieri et al., 2024). One of the largest allies against human trafficking is faith-based communities. These organizations have strong relationships with the community and play a major role as key stakeholders in the fight against human trafficking (Hounmenou, 2023). The Christian Community is a service-driven group that helps those who are in destitution. Evangelical Christian Pastors in the United States Midwest acknowledge that their congregations struggle when they try to help human trafficking victims due to the lack of understanding and involvement with research and discussion. This community has a moral and spiritual perspective that focuses more on “saving” the individual without understanding the true knowledge behind the issue (Knight & Kagotho, 2022). Human trafficking victims who go undetected can result in their specific physical, mental, and social needs going unaddressed. This is concerning because when victims are not properly identified and directed to the correct resources, it can lead to the victim suffering from more complex issues that include death (Beauvais et al., 2022).
