The Broad River Review is published annually by the Department of English Language and Literature at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. Previous incarnations of the journal include: The Green Scribe, One Little Candle, and Reflections.

The winner of the Foothills Poetry Award is Myla Athitang for the poem titled, "Sticky Rice." The Rash Awards, named in honor of Ron Rash, a 1976 graduate of Gardner-Webb University, are awarded annually for outstanding works in poetry and fiction. The 2019 award recipients are Matt Yeager, for his fiction work titled, “Lake Peigneur” and Jenn Blair for her poem titled “Blood Mountain.” Crystal Wilkinson and Dorianne Laux served as judges for the fiction and poetry contests, respectively.

The Rash Awards, named in honor of Ron Rash, a 1976 graduate of Gardner-Webb University, are awarded annually for outstanding works in poetry and fiction. The 2018 award recipients are Seth Wieck for his fiction work titled, “Tender Mercies of the Wicked” and Mark Svenvold for his poem titled “Coda: Eurydice as Déjà vu Finale.” Amy Greene and Maurice Manning served as judges for the fiction and poetry contests, respectively.

The 2016 award recipients are Lind Heuring for her fiction work titled "Red Light, Green Light" and Priscilla Webster-Williams for her poem titled "Occupational Therapy at a TB Sanitarium, 1952." Alan Michael Parker and Lee Smith served as judges for the fiction and poetry contests, respectively.

The 2015 award recipients are Sam Grieve for his fiction work titled, “We Are All Nobody” and Patricia L. Hamilton for her poem titled “Trespass.” Aaron Gwyn and David Kirby served as judges for the fiction and poetry contests, respectively.

The 2012 award recipients Abigail Lipscomb for her fiction work titled, “Carousel” and Karen Luke Jackson for her poem titled, “A Triptych on the First Anniversary of My Mother’s Death.” Jill McCorkle of Hillsborough, North Carolina, and Kathryn Stripling Byer of Cullowhee, North Carolina, served as judges for the fiction and poetry contests, respectively.

The 2011 award recipients are Marylee MacDonald for her fiction work titled, “Tea & Sugar” and Celisa Steele for her poem titled, “To a Son on the Verge of Divorce.” Silas House of Berea, Kentucky, and Cathy Smith Bowers of Asheville, North Carolina, served as judges for the fiction and poetry contests, respectively.

The 2010 award recipients are Christine Bates for her fiction work titled, “The Night I Killed the Devil” and Sarah Gordon for her poem titled, “Apertures: Andalusia.” George Singleton of Easly, South Carolina and Keith Flynn of Asheville, North Carolina, served as judges for the fiction and poetry contests, respectively.

The winner of the Editor's prize in Poetry is Sarajane Burroughs for her work titled, "Daddy." The winner of the Editor's Prize in Fiction is Nikki Raye Rice for her work titled, "Porch Spider." The Broad River Review 2009 issue won best in show from the North Carolina College Media Association, with Sarajane Burroughs, Nikki Raye Rice, and Trudy Roth receiving honorable mentions in their respective categories of poetry, fiction, and art.
