Description

Original copy of the Federal Census of 1850 of Cleveland County. This record includes: Schedule 1 - Free Inhabitants, Schedule 2 - Slave Inhabitants, Schedule 3 - Mortality Tables, Schedule 4 - Products of Agriculture, Schedule 5 - Products of Industry, and Schedule 6 - Social Statistics.

The 1850 census was enumerated by Dr. James W. Cabannis, Assistant Marshal in Polkville, NC. Enumeration began on July 29, 1850 through October 21, 1850.

In 1937, P. Cleveland Gardner lead the preservation efforts for this record. He created an index of heads of household with transcription assistance from Dovie Logan (Shelby). He contracted the repair and binding of the record with Edna Cook (Belwood), Carrie Crockett (Shelby), and Jessie O'Shield (Shelby).

Gardner's Index represents pages 1-26 of this document. Penciled annotations throughout the record are made by P. Cleveland Gardner. Ink annotations in blue and red are made by Dovie Logan.

Transcriptions for Schedules 1 - 6 are provided on the individual record pages for each schedule. This document was found in the Cleveland County Courthouse with other county records in 1937 and is the sole property of Cleveland County under North Carolina State Law.
