Abstract
Introduction: The intention of this Doctor of Nursing Practice evidence-based project was to evaluate if providing education to the target community would increase awareness and knowledge of cardiovascular disease and healthy lifestyle habits. The goal was to increase educational knowledge and promote awareness of cardiovascular disease and healthy lifestyle habits.
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a critical health issue that prevails across the state of North Carolina, while continuing to remain one of the leading causes of death across the south-center Piedmont area of North Carolina. Several studies have proven that increasing knowledge on cardiovascular risks, promoting healthy exercise, and identifying healthy habits can help reduce cardiovascular disease. Teaching and improving education in this group of participants is a step forward in promoting knowledge and awareness on cardiovascular disease and healthy lifestyle habits in the community.
Methods: Four 40-minute educational seminars were held at the target community’s senior center. An optional questionnaire survey to measure knowledge was given prior to and following the educational intervention.
Results: Eleven participants completed the educational session, and all 11 completed the pre-test survey and the post-test survey. An increase in knowledge and awareness was seen after the intervention was implemented. The study showed education can promote awareness and increase knowledge on cardiovascular disease and healthy lifestyle habits.
