Abstract

Nurses are in a unique position to positively impact the outcomes of patients with diabetes. To effectively accomplish this task nurses must have a working knowledge of evidence-based treatment modalities. This project aims to identify the complexity of diabetes in the acute care setting. Guided by Patricia Benner's Novice to Expert model, nurses in a medical surgical intensive care unit were assessed for concepts associated with basal-bolus-correction insulin therapies. Results revealed a need for the development of a comprehensive education program, applicable to all nurses in the acute care setting. The short and long term effectiveness of the program will be determined by further assessment immediately following the program and again after three and six months.
