Description

This article traces the introduction of telephone technology to Shelby and Cleveland County in the late 19th century. It describes the first local connections between Dr. Victor McBrayer’s home and drugstore, the establishment of Shelby’s first telephone exchange around 1895, and early operators and equipment. The narrative also recounts the county’s first long-distance call between Shelby and Double Shoals, illustrating how unfamiliar residents were with the new technology.
