Description

Anxiety and implications of anxiety were studied in nursing student-athletes. This qualitative research looked at perceptions of nursing student-athletes’ anxiety and feelings of perfectionism. Three main research questions were investigated: What impact does anxiety have on a nursing student-athletes? How does perfectionism affect a nursing-student athlete's anxiety? How can coaches and professors aid in the reduction of the nursing student-athlete's anxiety? Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded. Resulting phenomena led to the concept of the Triad of Anxiety. It was found that nursing student-athletes experienced perceived threats, negative internal experiences, and used coping phenomena to avoid or control their internal experiences. Individuals who considered themselves perfectionists experienced even more negative internal experiences than those who did not consider themselves perfectionists.
