The Gardner-Webb University Summer Undergraduate Research Scholars Program gives students like Virginia “Ginny” Merrill, of Charleston, S.C., experience that will lead to future discoveries in their careers. Merrill, a chemistry major and French minor, plans to graduate in 2023, attend graduate school and work in cosmetic chemistry.

Gardner-Webb’s Dr. Dee Hunt Passes Away

Gardner-Webb University recently said goodbye to a legendary leader of the campus community. Dr. Dee Hunt passed away on July 8 after a courageous battle with an extended illness. Hunt served in many roles throughout her decades-long career at GWU. During her nearly 40 years of service, she was a professor, coach, administrator, dean, department chair and community advocate.

As the guardsmen’s rough, scratched hands reached to pet and play with a couple of puppies, tension left the room and the group relaxed. The scene marked the first time U.S. Air Force Maj. Christina Pryor Pittman, 169th Fighter Wing chaplain, utilized animal therapy at McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Columbia, S.C.

GWU’s Year-round, Online Classes Allowed Teacher Assistant to Earn Degree in Five Semesters

When Melissa Ramsey, of Shelby, N.C., walked across the stage at Gardner-Webb University’s May 2021 commencement, she crossed a start-finish line. Completing a 16-year journey, the teacher assistant received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. At the same time, she took the first step on her new adventure as a third-grade teacher.

Exhibit by GWU Art Professor Featured on July 8-Aug. 12 at Cleveland County Arts Council

A collection of 26 sculptures by Doug Knotts, professor and chair of the Gardner-Webb University Department of Visual Arts, views racial tensions across the country through the lens of historical elements from African culture. The terra cotta pieces, called “Unarmed African American Portrait Heads,” will be on display July 8-Aug. 12 at the Cleveland County Arts Council, 111 S. Washington St., Shelby, N.C. Gardner-Webb serves as an Affiliate Member for the Arts Council.

Gardner-Webb Offers Boiling Springs Fire Department Training Opportunity on June 30

Boiling Springs Fire Department will conduct a series of training exercises over the next few days at the former Hardee’s location, 206 S. Main St. The event will conclude with a controlled burn on June 30 that will interrupt traffic flow in the evening. This property was purchased by Gardner-Webb University in January. An announcement about redevelopment plans for future GWU use will be made soon.

Professor Emeritus Began Teaching at Gardner-Webb in 1967 When First Baccalaureate Class Were Freshmen

Dr. Robert Morgan, professor emeritus of French and mathematics, first arrived at Gardner-Webb in 1967. Having previously taught at a high school, then Wingate Junior College, he shared that the shift to senior college at Gardner-Webb only made sense. “I was so happy!” he said quite emphatically. Laughing, he continued, “I was probably one of the most excited people about our becoming a senior college, because I had just come to Gardner-Webb when the ones who ultimately got a baccalaureate in ‘71 were freshman students, so that made a wonderful time to be there.”

Gardner-Webb Offers Scholarship Programs to Christian Churches and Organizations

In 2019, Gardner-Webb University officials announced a substantial expansion of Church-Matching and Minister’s Dependent scholarship programs. That year, only three students had received funds through these avenues. Since announcing the commitment, more than 50 students have been awarded over $250,000 in aid.

Gardner-Webb University Announces Tuition Freeze For Third Year

For the third year in a row, Gardner-Webb University has announced a freeze on tuition for traditional undergraduate students enrolled in the Boiling Springs campus program. The freeze will apply to incoming freshmen, transfer students and current undergraduates for fall 2021.

Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps Returns to the Field After Nearly Two Years

After nearly two years, Carolina Crown returns to the performance field on July 10 to present an evening of celebration and fun. The production, “Project21: In My Mind,” will be in Spangler Stadium, 150 Stadium Drive, at Gardner-Webb University. Gates to CrownLIVE will open at 6:30 p.m. with the live performance starting at 8:30 p.m. in the stadium. The show will include features by individual sections of the Corps as well as the full 2021 production.

GWU Alumna’s Undergraduate and Divinity Degrees Prepared Her for Ministry in Sweden

How did a little girl, who grew up in Hickory, N.C., end up 4,436 miles away, serving as a missionary in Stockholm, Sweden, for 16 years? “It’s totally Jesus,” asserted Jordana Hart Surell. She was 9 years old when she accepted Jesus as her Savior and Lord. She promised to follow Him, even when His directions didn’t make sense.

GWU’s Academics and Extracurricular Activities Prepared Alumna for Graduate School and Optometry Field

Recruited by the Gardner-Webb Swim Team, Dr. Jessica Cameron, ’08, came to the University for more than its competitive swim program. The Florida native was also drawn to the campus and its people. “I fell in love with the beauty of the campus, the friendly and personal faculty, and small classroom sizes,” Cameron affirmed.

GWU Accounting Instructor Competes in his First Half Ironman

Exhausted, Ghassan Antonios Dib, Gardner-Webb University accounting instructor, was in Panama City just a few miles away from completing his first half Ironman, a total distance of 70.3 miles. His muscles started to cramp when he was 8 miles into the last segment, a 13.1-mile run. “Those last 5 miles were brutal with pain,” Dib shared. “At the finish line, I was the happiest person in the world.”

More than 2,000 Children to Attend CentriKid Camps on Gardner-Webb Campus

More than 2,000 children, along with their adult leaders, will visit Gardner-Webb University this summer as the campus hosts CentriKid, an overnight camp for third- through sixth-graders. Through July 23, nine different groups will attend to participate in fun activities while learning about the message of Jesus Christ.

Gardner-Webb University and its video production partner, Kim Brattain Media (KBM) in Charlotte, N.C., won a Silver Telly Award for the video, “This is Gardner-Webb Football.” Produced during 2020, the film was created to build excitement for the fall 2020 football season.

Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps Returns to Gardner-Webb for Training Camp

After cancelling camp and its touring season last summer, Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps will return to Gardner-Webb University on June 5 for an intense month of learning. The group, which includes 184 members, 40 teaching staff, and 10 administrators plus athletic training staff, will be on campus until July 10.

GWU Will Rededicate Hamrick Hall During Its First Memorial Day Service on May 28

Gardner-Webb University will hold its first Memorial Day Prayer Service on Friday, May 28, in front of E.B. Hamrick Memorial Hall to remember those from the GWU community and others who have died in military service to their country. Tracy Jessup, vice president for Christian Life and Service and senior minister to the University, will lead the event, which begins at 11:30 a.m.

Members of Gardner-Webb Alpha Chi Participate in Virtual National Convention

Gardner-Webb University Alpha Chi members recently participated in the National Convention, which was held virtually this year. Rising senior Grace Burgin, of Iron Station, N.C., was awarded a Region III scholarship. A biology major, Burgin presented a paper that examined how fetal nutrition and development are affected by a mother’s participation in fad diets. She conducted her research through the GWU Summer Undergraduate Research Scholar program.
