    Gardner-Webb University’s graduate programs o!er two upcoming start dates this summer. For those who are ready to begin pursuing their master’s in business administration, accounting, sports management or English, online programs start in June. However, these programs along with others in public administration, religion, nursing, counseling, divinity and education also have programs starting in August.

    The Memorial Day Observance at Gardner-Webb University on May 23 featured retired Navy Commander John E. “JES” Sutton as the featured speaker. A 1976 alumnus, Sutton presented a brief history of Memorial Day. He noted, in particular, the stories of courage and sacrifice that impact his reflective approach to the day.

    Shebra Hughes, a 2013 alumna of Gardner-Webb University, and her husband Tommy love visiting campus. They reminisce about when she was a student and they were dating, but also enjoy representing the company they work for: Waffle House. A senior vice president, Shebra manages 81 locations in North Carolina from Greensboro to Cherokee.

    A month after graduating from Gardner-Webb University in 2014 with her Master of Arts in school counseling, Gaby Laurent, 26, received both joyous and heartbreaking news. She and her husband, Joseph, were expecting their first child. However, through routine bloodwork, doctors discovered she had acute myeloid leukemia, a type of cancer normally found in 70-year-olds.

    Brittany Evans, a visiting instructor in the Elementary Education Program, has received the Nancy Francis-Gregg Day-Adjunct Award for 2024. Evans has served as an adjunct in the College of Education (CoE) since 2021. This semester, she joined the faculty full-time as a visiting instructor in the Elementary Education Program. She has recently taken on additional classes and is supervising student teaching.

    Gardner-Webb’s basketball teams will officially tipoff for a fans-only event on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 9:30 p.m. Join the ‘Dawgs as they present Bulldog Madness inside Paul Porter Arena. Doors open at 9 p.m., and admission is free to the general public. Wear a costume to compete for a prize.

    The Gardner-Webb University Department of Music will present a performance by Blue Ridge Consort on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. in Dover Chapel as a part of the 2024-25 GWU Distinguished Artist Series. During the concert, individuals will have an opportunity to contribute monetary donations to help those in western North Carolina.

    Gardner-Webb University and the O!ice of Student Engagement will host the Western N.C. Benefit Concert on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. in the Brinkley Amphitheater. The event will raise funds and collect donations for disaster relief e!orts in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Three musical acts will share their talents—The Local Boys, Howltree, and Mason Cole— and offer the community an opportunity to come together in support of those impacted by the storm in western North Carolina.

    Ron Rash, award-winning writer and professor, will return to Gardner- Webb University on the heels of his induction into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. The ’76 alumnus will offer a public reading on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. and take questions from the audience. The free event is open to the community and will be held in Tucker Student Center’s Stewart Hall.

    Gardner-Webb University is partnering with Atrium Health and Invision Diagnostics to host a mammogram screening event on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Invision’s 3D Mammography Bus will be located at 110 S. Main Street in Boiling Springs.

    Bo’s Battle ‘QUE is back at Gardner-Webb Homecoming this year as a sanctioned event by the Southern BBQ Network (SBN), a 501c3 charitable organization. SBN was formed in 2010 by people who love to eat barbecue and share a passion for the art of preparing it. The mission of SBN is to preserve southern barbecue through qualified trained judges, while also improving communities through supporting charitable events.

    In Iquitos, Peru, one in 12 children under the age of 15 is abandoned to live on the streets or placed in foster care. The main reason is poverty: Parents simply don’t have money to care for their children. At times, the situation becomes overwhelming to Gardner-Webb University 2017 alumna Caroline Ashley Marvin Leitten. The needs are great, and her ministry, Go Love Peru, is only equipped for 24 orphans.

    Dr. Sarah Curry defended her dissertation for the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree at Gardner-Webb in 2021. Since then, she has used her education as a researcher in fiscal and economic public policy. Recently, her research topic, “E!ects of Advance Refunding Municipal Bonds After the U.S. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA),” gained the attention of the U.S. House Means and Ways Committee.

    Gardner-Webb recently submitted the required Fi!h Year Interim report to its accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC (https://sacscoc.org/)) and is deemed in full compliance. The University is accredited to award associate, baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees. Gardner-Webb also may o"er credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels.
