    The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant Inc. (ARC-PA) recently granted Accreditation-Continued status to the Physician Assistant (PA) Studies Program at Gardner-Webb University. Ami R. Steele, PA Studies chair, program director and associate professor, said the accomplishment recognizes the exceptional teamwork of PA faculty and staff, and valuable contributions from the GWU administration.

    After graduating from Gardner-Webb University in 1987, Roberta Borden Wilson spent the next 15 years working as a journalist. She also taught journalism at GWU for two years and later left newspapers to became a high school English teacher. During her 14 years as a teacher, Wilson began the transition to a career that had interested her when she was younger.

    In November 2019, broadcast journalists from Rome Reports TV, a private and independent international TV news agency based in Rome, Italy, visited the campus of Gardner-Webb University. Antonio Olivié, chief executive officer, and Arturo Anastasio, cameraman, made the trip to America to interview Jay Zimmer, GWU instructor of biology. Olivié was doing research for a documentary about Jesus’ final hours, and it’s now available on the company’s app.

    As emails referring to the Coronavirus pandemic began to fill Dr. Hebert Palomino’s inbox earlier in March, he wanted to respond in a timely manner. Many of the questions were the same and related to facing the current crises while providing care to others. Palomino, professor of pastoral care and counseling at Gardner-Webb University, also serves as member care coordinator for missionaries in the Americas with the International Mission Board.

    It’s been more than three weeks since the singing stopped in Julia DeSerio’s classroom at Crest Middle School, but the ever-dedicated chorus teacher is still finding ways to keep music in her students’ lives thanks to technology. DeSerio, a Gardner-Webb University alumna, has been hosting digital meetups for chorus students so her kids can still participate in music-making together. Every day at 1 p.m. DeSerio boots up her laptop and signs into a Google Hangout created specifically for her class and, using the site’s screen share feature, shares audio and lyrics for students to sing to while at home.

    When sophomore Bailey Reep learned that Gardner-Webb University was changing to exclusive online delivery to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, she thought about the poor internet connection at her home in Cherryville, N.C. It would make finishing the semester at home difficult for her, but how would GWU officials respond to her problem? She contacted the Office of the Dean of Students and explained her situation.

    ”Gardner-Webb will light candles in the Dover Chapel as symbolic reminders that there is great brightness in our world and a firm assurance of better days ahead each and every night until we have passed through the worst of this storm,” promised Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William M. Downs. Downs made this pledge in a video prayer vigil posted to the University Facebook page on March 30.

    The World Health Organization (WHO) was one of the first to recognize that the term “social distancing” gives the wrong impression during the Coronavirus pandemic. The organization suggested individuals practice “physical distancing” while strengthening social ties. On the Gardner-Webb University campus—where the average class size is 17—staying connected is second nature.

    Annie Deaton realized her call to youth ministry as a senior in high school. After choosing to attend Gardner-Webb University, she learned that the Accelerated Pastoral Ministries Program (APMP) would allow her to answer her calling in less time than traditional programs, which generally take seven years to complete. Launched in 2016 at Gardner-Webb, the APMP provides students who are called to serve as pastors with both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in five years of study.

    A Gardner-Webb faculty leader, who has served the University for nearly three decades, has been honored with a prestigious award for scholarly research. Dr. David Yelton, associate provost for the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of history, received the Vandervort Prize from the “Journal of Military History.” Yelton is one of four historians to receive the award this year.

    When Daniel Abrahao graduated from Gardner-Webb University in 2005, he missed training and competing with the Men’s Tennis Team. Abrahao was 18 when he left his home in Sao Carlos, Brazil, to attend GWU. “It was an overall amazing experience,” he reflected.

    CrossFit Gardner-Webb University is sponsoring its first competition with the help of 2005 alumnus Daniel Abrahao, owner of WOD (Workout of the Day) League USA. The event, originally scheduled for April 25, has been postponed until Sept. 19, beginning at 8 a.m. in Suttle Wellness Center. Besides being a first for GWU, this unique event will have five divisions—novice, scaled, Rx, teens, and masters.

    As a chemistry major at Gardner-Webb University, Evan Moffitt Drake, ’12, knew she wanted to be a pharmacist. In graduate school, she discovered the profession had more options than working in a hospital or retail pharmacy. Drake, a resident of Hendersonville, N.C., chose to become an ambulatory care pharmacist and is employed with St. Luke’s Hospital in Columbus, N.C.

    The Gardner-Webb University Distinguished Artist Series concert featuring GWU violin professors, Calin Lupanu and his wife, Monica Boboc, scheduled for March 17, has been postponed. A new date for the concert will be announced later. Lupanu and Boboc, who are both artists-in-residence at Gardner-Webb, founded “Chamber Music 4 All” to bring high quality chamber music to people of all ages and socioeconomics.

    The Gardner-Webb University Board of Trustees recently elected new members to serve two consecutive four-year terms. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall policies of the University. Jennifer Marion Mills, of Charlotte, N.C., currently serves as chair of the board.

    Gardner-Webb University announced this week that all face-to-face classes will transition to online delivery for the remainder of the month. As nations around the world adapt to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, businesses practicing diligence in preparation and prevention measures stand the best chance at averting the spread. Gardner-Webb is currently on Spring Break, and GWU President Dr. William Downs has extended break until March 18, so professors are able to implement the online transition of classes.

    The Gardner-Webb University School of Divinity and The Center for Healthy Churches (CHC) recently held their first training event since announcing their partnership last fall. More than 60 clergy and lay leaders from North and South Carolina attended “Turnaround Leadership: Life in the 2020s” led by Dr. Bill Wilson, CHC director. Joining the guests for the workshop on the Gardner-Webb campus were about 20 members of the GWU faculty and staff.

    The Gardner-Webb University College of Health Sciences and CaroMont Health have announced an expanded educational partnership. Students in the Physician Assistant (PA) Studies program will benefit from the CaroMont Health Clinical Hub partnership for practice rotations. The GWU Nurse Practitioner (NP) Program will also see an expansion of a long-standing relationship with CaroMont.

    Gardner-Webb University students presented their undergraduate and graduate research recently at the 23rd annual Life of the Scholar-Multidisciplinary Conference (LOTS-MC). More than 50 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the event. Dr. David Yelton, GWU associate provost of the College of Arts and Sciences, gave opening remarks, and GWU President Dr. William M. Downs was the speaker for the joint session.

    Two entities that have former North Carolina Governor, O. Max Gardner, as their namesake are pleased to announce a new partnership. The first week in March, the office of the O. Max Gardner Foundation Inc. is moving from Shelby, N.C., into a home in Boiling Springs owned by Gardner-Webb University. The new location at 1410 College Ave. was endowed to the University by Dr. and Mrs. Dan Moore.

    Gardner-Webb is working to ensure the health and safety of the University community by closely monitoring the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and any impact it could have on our campuses. There are currently no reported cases in our region. Gardner-Webb, in collaboration with local and state health officials, is taking steps to prepare for potential cases, including keeping current with the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations related to surveillance, evaluation and response.
