GWU Hunt School of Nursing Faculty Member Named to 2018 Great 100 N.C. Nurses List

A faculty member for the Gardner-Webb University Hunt School of Nursing has been named a top nurse in the state of North Carolina by a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the best in the nursing profession each year. A resident of Shelby, N.C., Dr. Anna Hamrick was selected by the Great 100, Inc. as a “Great 100 Nurse” for 2018. Hamrick serves as assistant professor of nursing and chair of Family Nurse Practitioner programs at GWU.

Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre Presents Play by GWU Associate Provost

A comedy written by Dr. Doug Bryan, associate provost for Student Success at Gardner-Webb University, will be presented in August by the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre (SART). Directed by Jim Thomas, SART founder and former dean of the GWU School of Performing and Visual Arts, performances are in Owen Theatre on the campus of Mars Hill University, 44 College St., Mars Hill, N.C. The play, titled “I-YA-I-YA-O,” is based on Bryan’s experiences living and teaching in such places as Nigeria, Hong Kong, Lithuania, Romania and India.

Gardner-Webb Partners with Fayetteville Tech to Help Students Complete Degrees

Gardner-Webb University and Fayetteville Technical Community College (Fayetteville, N.C.) officials have announced a partnership that will further ease the transfer process for students. Representatives for both schools recently signed agreements to create continuous degree tracks for students who complete any associate’s degree program at Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) and finish a baccalaureate program at Gardner-Webb. The Transfer Admission Promise (TAP) agreement provides a seamless pathway into any of GWU’s undergraduate programs.

Semester in Washington, D.C., Gave GWU Alumnus Valuable Experience in Music Industry

During his last semester at Gardner-Webb University, Chris Coffey, 2017 alumnus, worked with one of the top music business in the country. As an intern at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Coffey worked directly with professional musicians, and helped schedule concerts for the Youth Fellowship program. “I constantly learned about arts administration and the practices of a successful arts organization,” he shared. “I could not praise the staff at the Kennedy Center enough. Everyone was kind, helpful, and willing to share their immense knowledge of the industry.”

Gardner-Webb Alumnus Recognized for Business Success and Community Service

Since graduating from Gardner-Webb University in 2014, Kyeonta “Keon” Williams Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., has endeavored to serve others on the job and in the community. Recently, he was recognized with an award that acknowledges his business success and volunteer efforts. He was named to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Black Chamber of Commerce 30 Under 30 Class of 2018. He was nominated for the honor by five of his colleagues from Wells-Fargo Securities.

Earning Master of Business Administration Helped GWU Alumna Reach Career Goals

Despite having 13 years of experience in her field, Stephanie Carouthers Kelly of Waxhaw, N.C., couldn’t advance in her career because she didn’t have a Master of Business Administration (MBA). She didn’t want to get passed over for the next promotion, so when Gardner-Webb University offered an MBA program near her, she enrolled. The classes were offered to employees of the city of Shelby and Cleveland County, N.C.

Gardner-Webb University and Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) Develop Training Partnership

A new partnership between Gardner-Webb University and Charlotte Fire Department will help develop a stronger pool of fire service candidates, according to officials who signed an agreement at Charlotte Fire Department headquarters on June 26. As part of the “Career Readiness Project,” Gardner-Webb will provide multi-phased support to firefighter candidates participating in the annual Charlotte Fire Department written entrance exam. The objective is to assist participants with standardized test-taking skills and increase their ability to successfully complete the exam with a passing score.

Gardner-Webb Honored Among National Colleges of Distinction

Gardner-Webb University has been recognized by a national organization that rates colleges on high-impact educational practices and student engagement. For its dynamic out-of-classroom learning and study abroad programs, GWU has earned the title of College of Distinction. The honor also acknowledges the University’s commitment to such core competencies as critical thinking, writing, oral skills, research, and global perspectives, said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction.

Gardner-Webb Announces New Partnership with WinShape Camps Beginning Next Summer

Officials at Gardner-Webb University have announced a new partnership with WinShape Camps, established in 1985 by Chick-fil-A founder, S. Truett Cathy—that will allow the organization to expand its overnight camp offerings into the Carolinas. In June 2019, Gardner-Webb will become the fifth location to host overnight WinShape Camps and is the first location for overnight camps outside the state of Georgia. Early registration for the one-week boys’ and girls’ camps opened on June 6, with first-time overnight campers eligible for a 50-percent discount.

Nine Cleveland County Students Receive Joseph B. Freeman Jr. Scholarships

For more than 25 years, the Joseph B. Freeman Jr. Education Fund has assisted students in Cleveland County, N.C., in their pursuit of higher education. The 2018 winners were named on May 30 in a ceremony held in Tucker Student Center at Gardner-Webb University. A total of $20,000 in scholarships was provided to nine students, and three of them are planning to attend Gardner-Webb this fall.

Gardner-Webb Hosts Annual Meeting of National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion

Gardner-Webb University recently hosted approximately 70 professors and graduate students in religion for the annual meeting of the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion (NABPR). This was the University’s second time hosting the event. Dr. Steven R. Harmon, associate professor of historical theology in the GWU School of Divinity, is NABPR vice president and president-elect.

Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps Returns to Gardner-Webb for Annual Training

Gardner-Webb University welcomes more than 150 student musicians and the sounds of a world-class drum and bugle corps as Carolina Crown returns to campus for its annual spring training. Carolina Crown, a contender each year for the Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championship, has partnered with Gardner-Webb since 2007 for practice and rehearsal space prior to its national tours. Based in Fort Mill, S.C., Carolina Crown finished third in the 2017 DCI competition with their show “It Is…” and earned a world championship in 2013 with “E=MC^2.”

Gardner-Webb Hosts Annual LifeWay Kids Camps June 11 – July 27

Gardner-Webb will welcome more than 3,000 children and adults to the University for seven weeks this summer as the campus hosts a LifeWay Kids Christian camp series for the fourth consecutive year. CentriKid, a children’s ministry of the international Christian resources organization LifeWay, offers youth in grades three through six opportunities for Bible study, worship and recreational experiences. Camps are organized and led by teams of young adults, including college and seminary students, who help serve as directors, pastors and worship leaders.

Gardner-Webb University Announces Dean’s List, Honor Roll Recipients

Gardner-Webb University is pleased to announce its Dean’s List and Honor Roll in recognition of undergraduate students’ exemplary academic achievements during the Spring 2018 semester. The Dean’s List is composed of undergraduate college students with a grade point average of 4.0 if enrolled for 12-14 hours and 3.7 if enrolled for 15 or more hours with no grade lower than a “C.” The Honor Roll is composed of undergraduate college students with a grade point average of 3.5 who are enrolled for 12-14 hours with no grade below a “C” or students with a grade point average of 3.2 who are enrolled for 15 or more hours with no grade below a “C.”

Gardner-Webb University Employees Honored for Excellence with Annual Awards

Gardner-Webb honored outstanding faculty and staff members recently during the University’s annual “Apples and Accolades” program. The 2018 Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Jay Zimmer, who serves as instructor of Biology in the Department of Natural Sciences. “Outside of the classroom, he is just as committed to helping students apply their classroom knowledge,” GWU President Dr. Frank Bonner shared during the ceremony.

Gardner-Webb University’s Annual Fundraiser Breaks Records

Officials at Gardner-Webb University are thanking supporters for their part in the record-breaking success of #DoubleDawgDay, the University’s annual day of giving to support student scholarships and financial aid. Launched on May 3, “#DoubleDawgDay” raised $90,310—exceeding last year’s total. A generous 221 donors gave—including current students, who shattered last year’s student total with a 1,300-percent increase.

Gardner-Webb University’s Pastors’ School Planned May 28 – 30

Gardner-Webb University’s 2018 Pastors’ School, an annual three-day educational retreat for pastors and students of ministry and theology, is scheduled for May 28 – 30 at GWU. The 2018 School will feature guest speakers Dr. Guy Sayles and Dr. William Wilson, who will be sharing on the topic “Leadership in Perilous Times.” Sayles served as a pastor for over 30 years, most recently at the First Baptist Church of Asheville, N.C.

Gardner–Webb University hosted Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 12 in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center. More than 550 graduates were honored during two separate ceremonies. Several university milestones were achieved during the exercises.

Officials at Gardner-Webb University are thrilled to announce that Dr. Prince Bull has been appointed as the new dean of the GWU School of Education beginning July 1. Bull replaces Dr. Doug Eury, who retired from the post last summer. Assistant Professor of Education Dr. Bruce Boyles has served as interim dean since last August.

Military wives often wonder what they will do while their husband is deployed. The answer for Hannah Currin Keller, a 2012 alumna of Gardner-Webb University, was to follow God’s direction. Hannah is volunteering in West Africa for nine months, while her husband, Jake, a 2013 GWU alumnus, spends the next year serving in Iraq with the 878th National Guard Engineering Company based out of Kings Mountain, N.C.

When Cindy Trevisan earned her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Gardner-Webb University in 2005, she wanted to further her career in the financial field. While she excelled in her job, her husband, Giovanni, was co-owner of a popular restaurant. About a year ago, they decided to combine their talents and go into business for themselves.

GWU Alumna Finds Success as American Sign Language Interpreter and Christian Fiction Author

Miriam Downing Thor, a 2012 alumna of Gardner-Webb University, has a career she loves and is also pursuing her dream to become a published author. An American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter for Moore County Schools in Carthage, N.C., Thor recently signed with Anaiah Press to publish her first Christian novella, “Her First Noel.” Thor was in second grade when she discovered she had a talent for writing stories.
