Concert to Feature GWU Trumpet Professor

The Gardner-Webb University School of Performing and Visual Arts will present a distinguished faculty concert, featuring trumpeter Tim Hudson, on Thursday, Oct. 23. Hudson, a full-time faculty professor at Gardner-Webb, will perform with Ronnie Ingle, associate professor of trumpet at the University of North Dakota, and Cindy Swicegood, pianist and distinguished accompanist. Music begins at 8 p.m. in Blanton Auditorium, inside Hamrick Hall on the GWU campus.
Life Of The Scholar (LOTS) Program Set for Oct. 23 at Gardner-Webb

The latest Life Of The Scholar (LOTS) event at Gardner-Webb University will give the audience an inside look at theology and biblical interpretation in American history. GWU alum Dr. James P. Byrd, an associate professor of American Religious History at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tenn.), will speak on topics referenced in his latest book, “Sacred Scripture, Sacred War: The Bible and the American Revolution.” The lecture will be held Thursday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in Hope Hall, located within the Tucker Student Center.
Dawg Days Planned at GWU on Oct. 25 and Nov. 11

Gardner-Webb University is planning the first of two upcoming Dawg Days on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Tucker Student Center. Dawg Days are free visitation days that allow future students to become familiar with the University and what it has to offer. The second event is planned for Nov. 11.
Gardner-Webb Partners with the Community for Fall Events

Gardner-Webb University offers two events each fall that allow students and faculty an opportunity to give back to the community. The annual fall festival will offer games, candy and prizes, while a Broad River Greenway tour will educate kids about nocturnal animals that live in the surrounding area. Both events are free and open to the public. Octoberfest, an annual event that features games, crafts, prizes and candy, will be held Oct. 30 in the Tucker Student Center from 6-8 p.m.

Gardner-Webb Business School Notches Another Top 10 Ranking

Gardner-Webb University’s Godbold School of Business ranks No. 7 among all institutions nationwide for online master’s degree programs that train human resources professionals, according to a report by a website that analyzes business education performance. Gardner-Webb provides an online Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) Program that offers a concentration in human resources management. The University’s top 10 ranking by topmanagementdegrees.com places it ahead of the other three schools in the region that are on the top-50 list, including Liberty (Lynchburg, Va.), Western Carolina (Cullowhee, N.C.) and North Greenville (Tigerville, S.C.).
Gardner-Webb to Hold Auditions for Theatrical Drama

The Gardner-Webb University Theatre Arts Department invites GWU students, faculty, staff and community members to audition for parts in the upcoming drama production, “Getting Out.” Auditions will be held Wednesday, Oct. 22 and Thursday, Oct. 23, beginning at 7:30 p.m. both nights, in The Millennium Playhouse, located behind the Communication Studies Hall on the GWU campus. Six female roles and five male parts are available in the production.
Breast Cancer’s Impact on Display in Gardner-Webb Exhibit

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a photography and poetry exhibit and a discussion session at Gardner-Webb University will explore the disease’s impacts on people’s lives. The exhibit, “Edges of Light: Images of Breast Transformation,” will highlight breast cancer awareness and the effects the disease can have on a woman. Photographs by Wendy Palmer will be on display in the Tucker Student Center Gallery from Oct. 14 through Nov. 7.
Gardner-Webb Students Help Homeless in “60 Seconds of Service”

In only 60 seconds, Gardner-Webb University students worked to improve the lives of homeless individuals this week. Dozens of students gave a minute of their time to package socks and personal care items for shelter residents during the University’s first “60 Seconds of Service” community outreach project on Thursday, Oct. 9. Participants picked up a pair of socks and stuffed each with wet wipes, deodorant, lip balm, a toothbrush and toothpaste.
GWU Students to Embark on Service Trip to New York City Oct. 17-21

Gardner-Webb University’s Community Engagement and Campus Recreation offices are joining forces for the inaugural Fall Break Service Trip to New York City, set for Oct. 17-21. Brian Arnold, assistant director of student activities, and Micah Martin, director of student leadership development and community engagement, will accompany 14 students on a service-oriented trip to the Big Apple during fall break. While they are including time in their schedule for sightseeing, the primary purpose of the trip is to show students the wide range of volunteer and service opportunities through which they can become involved citizens.

Author and addiction recovery coach Mike Reis will share his story of overcoming the battle of alcoholism and other addictive behaviors on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 9:25 a.m. in the Paul Porter Arena, located inside the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC). The event is free and open to the public.

WGWG Radio Releases Mobile App, Expands Digital Presence

Gardner-Webb University’s radio station WGWG expanded its digital presence this week with the release of an original app for mobile devices. Both Apple and Android users can download the application from their stores to listen in live to the station and access on-demand programming, along with other mobile-exclusive features, free of charge. “By adding the app, we make tuning in much easier and specialize it to work with mobile devices—whether it’s a tablet or a smartphone,” said Jeff Powell, WGWG operations manager.
Writers Honored During Regional Conference at Gardner-Webb

Several regional writers received awards at the 2014 Appalachian Writers Association (AWA) meeting, held Oct. 4 at Gardner-Webb University. Recipients honored at the banquet were Lee Smith, T.R.C. Hutton and Jeff Marion. The AWA Book of the Year awards recognize superior and significant writing of authors from the Appalachian region, including the mountains and foothills of Alabama stretching north to Maine.
Longtime GWU Administrator Passes Away

The Gardner-Webb University community is mourning the loss of Dr. Dan Proctor, who is remembered for serving GWU for 25-plus years in numerous roles and for his lifetime devotion to his family. Proctor passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, at the age of 81. He completed a bachelor’s degree at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, and a bachelor’s degree and doctorates in theology and philosophy at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
Gardner-Webb to Host Second Annual Relay for Life Event

Cancer is responsible for one in every four American deaths. The disease’s impact on people in the Gardner-Webb University community led students to organize and host an inaugural Relay for Life fundraiser on campus in 2013. Nearly $24,000 was raised for American Cancer Society research, education and survivor support, and GWU students hope to build on that success with the second annual Relay event on Saturday, Oct. 11.
Hall of Famer David Thompson to Visit Gardner-Webb

Gardner-Webb University’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is proud to host Basketball Hall of Fame member David Thompson as guest speaker for its annual “Fields of Faith” outreach event. Led by students, Fields of Faith engages youth groups from the local community in a worship service. Set for Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena, located inside the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC), the event is free and open to the public.

Founder of Headbands of Hope Jess Ekstrom will share her love and passion for young children with deadly diseases on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 9:25 a.m. in the Paul Porter Arena, located inside the Lutz- Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC). Actor Robin Williams’ apparent suicidal death came as a shock to us all. Williams touched many lives through his life and career, and even his death. Local publications have done an excellent job of covering this tragedy, and have emphasized the need for more education about suicide.

String Octet to Play Free Show at Gardner-Webb

A world-class string octet will perform at Gardner-Webb University on Sunday, Oct. 5, in a free program presented by the GWU School of Performing and Visual Arts. The strings group will present selections that will include Shostakovich’s “Two Pieces for String Octet, Op. 11” and Enescu’s “Octet for Strings in C Major, Op. 7.”“This is tremendous music being played by some of the world’s finest string players,” said Dr. Patricia Sparti, chair of GWU’s music department.
GWU Divinity Professor Reviews New U2 Album

U2 forged a music career by blending the spiritual and secular worlds, and the band revisits its theological roots in its latest album, Gardner-Webb University Professor Dr. Steve Harmon offered in recent reviews for the Associated Baptist Press and WGWG.org. Harmon teaches in the GWU School of Divinity and specializes in Christianity, religion and theology. After discovering U2 as a high school student about 30 years ago, he has maintained an interest in the band, often reviewing the group’s albums.

Gardner-Webb University Homecoming Weekend Planned Oct. 2-4

Homecoming weekend at Gardner-Webb University is set for Oct. 2-4, and officials are planning many opportunities for alums to come back to Boiling Springs to reconnect with their alma mater and reunite with old friends. The Office of Alumni Affairs and the Office of Student Activities have planned a variety of fun activities, detailed below. Sixty-Mile Relay Adds to Gardner-Webb University Homecoming Rivalry on Oct. 4

Runners of several counties are invited to participate in the second annual “50 to 50 Military Appreciation Relay Run” event on Oct. 4. The relay involves a series of runners transporting the game ball nearly 60 miles from UNC Charlotte to GWU, just in time for the homecoming day gridiron matchup. The event is a joint effort by the adjoined ROTC programs at GWU and UNC Charlotte (which includes the Military Science and Aerospace Studies Departments – Army and Air Force).
Best-Selling Author Ron Rash to Visit GWU

Gardner-Webb University alumnus and best-selling author Ron Rash is set to visit GWU as he gains worldwide attention for “Serena,” his novel that was adapted into a feature film set to premiere next month. Rash will visit the campus Oct. 3 to give the keynote address at the Appalachian Writers Association’s annual awards banquet, part of the Southern Appalachian Culture Series conference hosted at Gardner-Webb. The 1976 GWU alum, also currently the John Parris Distinguished Professor of Appalachian Studies at Western Carolina University, will discuss Appalachian writing and read from some of his works.

Students will share testimonies of their mission experiences during the University’s weekly Dimensions program on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
