Associational Minutes. Includes minute records of the association from 1851 – 2001, when the association changed names to The Greater Cleveland County Baptist Association. Minutes reflect the accomplishments and struggles faced by the Association in each year of their work. Topical issues appearing in the minute records include temperance beliefs among local churches and the community, relationships with other local Baptist associations, local and foreign missions, and missions related to local soldiers during the Civil War. Records are complete with the exception of the 1855, 1865, and 1998 minute records. A partial book exists for the 1855 minutes. The 1865 and 1998 minutes are missing entirely. The 1865 minute book is available through Wake Forest University’s archival collection.

There was a challenge to the Association from the Missions Director to sponsor 10 refugee families. Plans for a proposed office building were unanimously voted on by the Executive Board.

The results of a study of pastoral tenure were included in the Director of Missions annual report. The Association had a ground-breaking ceremony for their new office building.

W. Clyde Bearden. The Christian Life Committee helped organize Citizens for Decency through Law (CDL) to address the issue of businesses that sell pornographic materials in Cleveland County. Dr. and Mrs. Wayne Washburn and Mr. and Mrs. Gaines Washburn donated a computer (TRS-80 Model II) to the Association.

The minutes are dedicated to the memory of Mr. Walter H. Dodd, Jr. It was the 100th year anniversary of the Children's Homes of North Carolina. The Association was asked by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina to pilot a Gleaners Ministry, with the emphasis on home gardens; this ministry had six families assigned to it.

Moderator Jeff Brendle's message addressed the Association's issues, such as new churches, the possibility of Black Southern Baptist churches wanting to join the Association, and whether the position for an Association Church Development Staff Person will finally be established. The Director of Missions' report describes emergency relief efforts for a tornado that hit Cleveland County and Hurricane Hugo.

The 1990 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association met at Pleasant Grover Baptist Church and Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The minutes are dedicated to the late Rev. Wilson Padgett and Rev. William Valentine Tarlton. Dr. Chris White, president of Gardner-Webb College, reports that Gardner-Webb has the largest number of ministerial students out of all Baptist colleges in North Carolina. Christopher Road Baptist Church was brought into full membership of the Association. The Strategy Planning Objectives were approved, including various retreats, evangelism in predominately Black communities, and educational opportunities for laity. The Bob Davis Endowment Fund was established by the Executive Board.

Davis, Sr. New Jerusalem Full Gospel Church was the first Black church to be accepted into membership of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association. A new staff position, Church Development Director, was approved.

Phipps, Robert Bruce Wilson, and Marlow Arthur Stroup. A lectureship at Gardner-Webb University was founded in honor of former Director of Missions, Rev. C.O. Greene. Dr. Sam James, Vice-President of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa for the Foreign Mission Board, was a guest speaker. The first project of a partnership with the Greater Rochester Baptist Association in Rochester, New York was held in July.

The 1995 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association met at Flint Hill Baptist Church and Sandy Plains Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The minutes are dedicated to the memory of Rev. Charles Webb Walker and Rev. Edly Byron Hicks. Rev. Yasuaki Fugunaga from Japan was visiting the Association, and mission partnerships with Japan and South Africa were being considered. Mrs. Mary Lou Causby is the first female moderator in the history of the Association. Church and Communities Ministry became a partner of the Metrolina Food Bank. Note that Rev. Bonnie Doughtie became the first Church Development Director in July 1994.

The 1996 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association met at Ross Grove Baptist Church and Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The minutes are dedicated to the memory of Rev. Amos M. Kiser, Sr., Rev. Rufus James Sanders, Jr., and Rev. Ernest M. Smith. Gardner-Webb is noted to be the only Baptist school in the state with programs for blind and deaf students. The Association announced their partnership with the Western Province Baptist Association in Cape Town, South Africa. The Executive Board and Missions Committee established the Kings Mountain Baptist Association Missions Foundation to assist individuals in participating in missions. Lansford Jolley is the new Associational Historian, replacing Dr. Wayne Washburn.

The 1997 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association met at Fallston Baptist Church in Fallston, NC and at Polkville Baptist Church in Polkville, NC. The minutes are in honor of Rev. and Mrs. C.O. Greene. Mission partnerships in South Africa and Cleveland, Ohio are pursued. John Woodard, director of the North Carolina Baptist Collection at Wake Forest, visited the Association and took several churches' minutes to be put on microfilm. Dreaming, Daring, Doing: The History of Gardner-Webb University by Lansford Jolley was published in June of this year.

The 1999 Fall meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association met at Zoar Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The Second Spring Session was held at Christopher Road Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The minutes are dedicated to the memory of Rev. C.O. Greene and Rev. Glenn Griffin Short. The Association includes their incorporation as a non-profit corporation. Gardner-Webb's School of Divinity is noted to be receiving accreditation from the Association of Theological Schools in November.

The 2000 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association met at Patterson Baptist Church, in Grover, NC and New Hope Baptist Church, in Earl, NC. The minutes are dedicated to memory of Rev. Rochelle Ray Ingle, Mrs. Jane Monroe Brendle, and Mrs. Mafrey Richard Sesson. The Baptist Counseling Center of Cleveland County was established in August; Dr. Gary McFarland is the counselor. Gardner-Webb is reported to be the fifth largest private university in the state and the Doctorate of Ministry program will begin next fall.

The Spring Session met at Camps Creek Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The minutes are dedicated to the memory of Rev. David Edward Lucas, Rev. Billy Daniel "Danny" Ritch, and Rev. H.F. "Bud" Tutherow. It is the 150th anniversary of the Association. Visions of Faith: The Sesquicentennial History of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association 1851-2001 by Lansford Jolley was published. Reflections on the events of September 11th focused on prayer.
