Associational Minutes. Includes minute records of the association from 1851 – 2001, when the association changed names to The Greater Cleveland County Baptist Association. Minutes reflect the accomplishments and struggles faced by the Association in each year of their work. Topical issues appearing in the minute records include temperance beliefs among local churches and the community, relationships with other local Baptist associations, local and foreign missions, and missions related to local soldiers during the Civil War. Records are complete with the exception of the 1855, 1865, and 1998 minute records. A partial book exists for the 1855 minutes. The 1865 and 1998 minutes are missing entirely. The 1865 minute book is available through Wake Forest University’s archival collection.

The 1928 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by J. L. Jenkins. The report on Christian Education suggest that members provide support for the Centennial Fund and Boiling Springs Junior College. The tentative agreement to transition Boiling Springs High School to a junior college was adopted by the Convention with a few amendments. J.B. Davis will take over as president of Boiling Springs Junior College, and J.D. Huggins will become dean. the Commitee on Obituaries reports the passing of Rev. A.H. Sims.

The report on State Missions recommends that pastors renew efforts to gain support for the State Missions, and that the Association should encourage its members to subscribe to the Biblical Recorder to stay informed. The Foreign Missions report indicated that missionary work in China, Latin America, Nigeria, and Europe has made progress. The Baptist Hospital reports recommends a Mother's Day offering contributions to help support the hospital's charity work. the Committee on Temperence put a seal of disapproval on dancing and other leisure activities on Sundays. The Committee on Obituaries reports the passing of W.F. Gold.

The 1930 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Patterson Springs Baptist Church in Patterson Springs, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by Wallace Hartsell. The State Missions report mentioned that the Board took on missionary work with Indians in Robeson County, and the Cherokees in Swain County. The Baptist Young People's Union (B.Y.P.U.) reported continued growth in membership. the Boilign Springs Junior College reported record enrollment growth. The College made arrangements to lease equipment and classrooms, and provide instruction for some high school subjects with the Cleveland County Board of Education.

The 1931 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Zion Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by L. L. Jessup. G.G. Page announced that he will no longer serve as Superintendent of the Kings Mountain Baptist Sunday School Association. The Report on Temperance and Public Morals resolved to oppose gambling and games of chance in the county. The Boiling Springs Junior College Annual Report indicated that the school's football program has been cut due to economy and expense. The Annual Report also asks that the Association's churches put the College in their budget.

The 1932 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at New Bethel Baptist Church in Lawndale, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by D. F. Putnam. The Foreign Mission Board reported that there are more baptisms abroad than there were church members twenty-five years ago. The Southern Baptist Convention asked the Baptists of the South to raise money to help with Foreign Mission Board expenses. The Report on Christian Education indicated that Boiling Springs Junior College has met all of the Standard Association of Southern Colleges and Secondary Schools' requirements except for the income requirement. The Association Historian's Report was read by C.J. Black. A motion to create a memorial tribute to the late J.D. Huggins was carried by J.L. Jenkins and J.H. Quinn.

The Women's Missionary Union was recognized at the State Convention for reaching all points on the Standard of Excellence. The Boiling Springs Junior College report indicated that there were a record number of students enrolled at the college, and that there were five states represented in the student body. The Report on Ministerial Relief and Annuities asked that churches contribute to the Relief and Annuity Board and Co-operative Program to help increase benefits paid to aging ministers and widows.

The report on Mills Home provided an overview of the Baptist Orphanage of North Carolina's 50 year history. An associational Deacon's Day meeting was held at Double Springs Church. The Boiling Springs Junior College report recommends that a permanent committee should be established to promote the interests of the College. The report on Christian Training indicated that the position of Boiling Springs Junior College president, filled by A.C. Lovelace, is now a full time position.

The 1936 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by W. G. Camp. The State Missions report indicated that great work is being done at the Oteen Mission hospital, which has 800 tubercular patients. The State Missions report recommends that all churches observe State Mission Day on the fourth Sunday in October, or some other time during the year. The Baptist Training Union report indicated that the Adult Union, which was created in the last few years, makes valuable contributions to the Baptist Training Union.

John William Suttle has served as Moderator for the Kings Mountain Baptist Association for twenty-five years. Wade D. Bostic, a missionary to China gave a report on the country's conditions.

The Women's Missionary Union observed its fiftieth anniversary. The Baptist Hospital report indicated that building expansion is needed to provide accommodations for more patients and equipment. The Committee on Our History recommends that the Association's executive committee should present a method for preserving the history of the Association at the next meeting.

The General Board reported the passing of Association Clerk Rev. J.V. DeVenny. The Baptist Training Union reported that its leader, Wynn Washburn, has left to pursue another field of service. The Association expressed gratitude towards the family of Bowman Gray for starting the Bowman Gray Fund for the purpose of establishing a medical school at Wake Forest College.

The 1940 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Carpenter's Grove Baptist Church in Lawndale, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by W. A. Elam. Dr. M.A. Adams, a representive from "Dry Forces" distributed cards to the Association to petition the state legislature for a statewide referendum on the topic. The Relief and Annuity Board reported that a new statewide plan called the North Carolina Ministers' Retirement Plan has been established. Polkville and Love Valley churches joined the Association. The General Board reported that N.L. Whistnant was elected to the office of Sunday School Superintendent.

The 1941 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by A. M. Kiser. The report on Boiling Springs Junior College states that the College is launching a fundrasing drive to raise $100,000. The WMU report stated that their 86 member raised $6540.40 in the last year for missions. The report on the Baptist Training Union stated that 32 of 48 Associational churches facilitated a training program. The Association took up an offering for Boiling Springs Junior College totaling $6986.03. The minutes concluded with the minutes of the WMU and statistical tables.

The 1942 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at New Hope Baptist Church in Earl, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by W. P. Biggerstaff. The Association voted to divide future meetings between two locations. It was reported that Boiling Springs Junior College has been renamed Gardner-Webb College after the Govenor O. Max Gardner and his wife Fay Webb Gardner. L. Bun Olive, missionary to Japanese-occupied China, reported on his 6 month imprisonment in China by Japanese forces. WMU reported that they have 92 funtioning organizations within the association and had raised $9000 in mission funds; their expanded report is at the end of the minute book. The report on the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem stated that 2,500 patients recieved free care; it is important for the association to continue to support the hospital's work. The report on Public Morality discussed the morality of war and the condition of humanity leading to a war situation. They called a vote of the Association to lead a protest of the sale of alcohol in and near army training camps. They also seek to entreat the local government to forbit the sale of alcohol on Sundays. Funds in the amount of $6479.43 were raised for Gardner-Webb College.

The 1943 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Shelby First Baptist Church and Double Springs Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by D. F. Putnam. Gardner-Webb College provided the Association with their 1942 operating budget. The report on orphanages stated that 687 children were placed in two Baptist orphanages, the largest annual number to date. They stressed the improtance of continued support for Baptist orphanages. The Foreign Mission Board reports that mission work in Europe and the Far East have ceased due to the war, but opportunities are open in Africa and South America. While positive reports come from missionaries stationed in Free China, the committee reports that "most of our missionaries are home for the duration [of the war], some few are on the fields while soem are detained in concentration camps." The Kings Mountain Baptist Association goes on record in opposition to the Biblical Recorder's endorsement that "the teaching of the Bible" be included in all local school curriculums.

The 1944 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Boiling Springs Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, NC and Flint Hill Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by W. A. Ayers. Gardner-Webb College reported peak enrollment and no debt for the past academic year. WMU reported that in 25 years of operations in the Association $161,800 was raised for missions. The report on the North Carolina Baptist Hospital stated that 2,336 of 7,609 patients were able to recieve free care. The report from the Committee on Public Morality reported increased concern with picture shows/movies and pornographic material circulating. Reported obituaries included a notation for servicemen who were killed in action. Wade Bostick, an active member of the association, passed away.

The 1945 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Fallston Baptist Church in Fallston, NC and Waco Baptist Church in Cherryville, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by Zeno Wall. The theme of this associational meeting was "The Call and Challenge of a New Era." The report on Education stated that families should encourage both their boys and girls to attend college. The report on World Missions in the New Era stated that an increase was needed in mission work to heal the world. Currently, 13 Central and South American countries have not had a Baptist missionary along with the Soviet Union and "Mohammedan" countries. A report on the Conditions within Our Territory state that there are many unchurched locations within Cleveland County which are of concern. The committee on Public Morality reported that in the last year 1,029 arrests were made for public drunkeness and 657 arrests for other crimes. Continued concerns for the care of aging or infirm ministers were reported. Obituaries noted those servicemen who were killed in action or were a casualty of war.

The 1946 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Union Baptist Church in Shelby, NC and Patterson Grove Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by C. C. Crow. The Kings Mountain Baptist Association in conjunction with the Sandy Run Baptist Association voted for Gardner-Webb College to enter into a cooperative agreement for financial support from the Baptist State Convention as had sister schools Wake Forest, Meredith, Campbell, and Mars Hill. The Sunday School committee reported a successful Vacation Bible School event. The Public Morals Committee expressed concern about the local community's practice of playing baseball and viewing moving pictures on Sundays. The committee put forth a vote for the Association to go on record as opposing these actvities on Sundays. War casualties were noted in memorium.

The 1947 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Ross Grove Baptist Church in Shelby, NC and New Bethel Baptist Church in Lawndale, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by W. W. Harris. The Report on Christian Education mentioned important developments impacting Gardner-Webb College as it related to the Council on Christian Education. Issues were raised regarding the balance between the Council and the colleges in reference to colleges maintain independence but surrendering enough control to the Council to govern finances, curriculum, and church-school relationships. WMU hosted a guest missionary from China. Baptist Hospital reported that 4,000 of 8,000 patients were able to receive free services. The report from the Church Beautification Committee included a list of church beautification projects. The Association is researching associational history in preparation for their 100 year anniversary. A report from the Baptist Radio Commission was included.

The 1948 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Casar Baptist Church in Casar, NC, Dover Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by D. Boyd Cannon. Gardner-Webb College reported its highest ever enrollment. College president (Elliott) reported that he is seeking membership for the school in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). There was reported growth and increased importance of the Vacation Bible School program. The report on orphans mentioned the new foster home program. The report on world relief discussed the aftermath of WWII and the role of Christians in providing relief.

The 1949 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Calvary Baptist Church, and Dover Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by Jesse Blalock.The General Board of the Association recommended that a committee be formed to investigate the purchase or building of a home to function as primary location for the Association. The Temperance and Public Morals report stated that the Dry Forces of North Carolina were successful in their efforts to impede liquour sales in North Carolina, despite the ABC's efforts to increase the number of wet counties in the state. The report on World Relief continued to address recovery from WWII.

The 1950 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs, NC and Double Springs Baptist Church and Double Shoals Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. For the centennial celebration of the Association a dramatic production, "A Dramatic Narrative of Baptist Progress," was performed by the Gardner-Webb College Dramatics Department. The program was directed by Ben C. Fisher; the minute book contains details regarding cast, acts, and production notes. The committee on Christian Literature asked for a renewed effort in dispensing christian publications. The General Board reported the gift of two parcels of land which will be used to build a missionary parsonage and church purposes. The committee on Public Morals suggested that the association assist the State Department of Education in teaching Alcohol Education courses in our region.
