The Gardner-Webb University campus is celebrating Black History Month with a variety of programs in February. The 2022 National Theme: Black Health and Wellness will also be the focus of GWU programs, including two film showings and a panel discussion.

Gardner-Webb Welcomes 220 Students to Compete for Full-Tuition Ignite Excellence Scholarships

An academically elite group of students will visit the Gardner-Webb University campus over four days to compete in the Ignite Excellence Scholarship program. About 120 students attended interviews on Jan. 27 and 28, and 100 more will participate in interviews on Feb. 3 and 4.

Book Co-edited by GWU Dean Prince H. Bull Examines Post-COVID-19 Education Environment

A new book co-edited by Dr. Prince Hycy Bull, dean of Gardner-Webb University’s College of Education, and Dr. Gerrelyn Chunn Patterson of North Carolina A&T (NCAT) University, will help educators in the post-COVID-19 environment. “Redefining Teacher Education and Teacher Preparation Programs in the Post-COVID-19 Era” also includes contributions from GWU faculty, students and an alumna.

International Author and Lecturer Trevor Hudson Discusses the Pastor’s Identity

Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) students at Gardner-Webb University were able to benefit recently from virtual lectures and discussions with spiritual formation personality, the Rev. Trevor Hudson, from Benoni, South Africa. The seminar class was made possible by endowed funds from the late Bonnie Price.

Ensemble Featuring GWU Faculty to Perform

The Distinguished Artist Series of Gardner-Webb University presents Summit recording artist, Carolina Brass, on Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Hamrick Hall’s Blanton Auditorium. Tim Hudson, GWU associate professor of music, founded Carolina Brass in 1997. The ensemble also features GWU instructors Bob Campbell, horn player, and Dave Wulfeck, trombonist.

Juan Cherry is Speaker for Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Observance at Gardner-Webb, Rescheduled for Feb. 10

Gardner-Webb University’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance has been rescheduled for a Dimensions program on Feb. 10 at 9:25 a.m. in Stewart Hall of Tucker Student Center. For over two decades, the University has designated the Tuesday program following the MLK holiday as a celebration of the Civil Rights leader. This year’s tribute also honors King’s legacy by introducing iBelong, a new mentoring initiative for minority males offered by the University’s Student Success Division. Guest speaker Juan Cherry is an alumnus and one of the mentors for the program.

Keesee Educational Fund Continues Ongoing Support of GWU Divinity School with Latest Gift

Since the fall of 2006, the Charles B. Keesee Educational Fund Inc. has been a valued and committed partner to the M. Christopher White School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University. The fund provides scholarships to numerous individual students who are preparing for church-related ministry, and the Foundation has presented grants to the divinity school for hands-on programs and academic enrichment opportunities.

Winners of Gardner-Webb Songwriting Competition in Concert on Jan. 22

The winners of a recent songwriting competition sponsored by the Gardner-Webb University Department of Music will present their compositions on Saturday, Jan. 22, in a concert in Stewart Hall, Tucker Student Center. Held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., the program is presented by the Distinguished Artist Series and the Alfred & Shirley Wampler Caudill Fund.

Three years ago, Dr. Kim Williams-Roberts had no intention of going back to school for a doctorate. She already had a master’s degree in health services management and a master’s in business administration. She was finished with school.

Gardner-Webb Hosts Dr. Russell Moore, ‘Christianity Today’ Public Theologian, on March 1, 2022

A national theologian, author and speaker will visit the Gardner-Webb University campus on March 1 and present three speeches. Dr. Russell Moore, public theologian at “Christianity Today” and director of Christianity Today’s Public Theology Project, will speak for the C.O. and Eliza Greene Endowed Lectureship Series hosted by the M. Christopher White School of Divinity at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Tucker Student Center. In addition, Moore will be the guest speaker for Dimensions at 9:25 a.m. in Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center.

Gardner-Webb Archives and Earl Scruggs Center Collaborate on Bible Exhibit

By the late 18th Century, Bibles had become treasured family heirlooms—not just for the spiritual aspect, but because the pages were used to record marriages, births and deaths. In recognition of the secular ways the Bible was used in the 19th and 20th centuries, Gardner-Webb University Archives and the Earl Scruggs Center of Cleveland County have created an exhibit: “Bound by Faith: The Bibles of Cleveland County.” The exhibit, sponsored by the O. Max Gardner Foundation, will be featured through March 31 in the Ali Pouryousefi Gallery at Tucker Student Center.

Books Inspire Gardner-Webb Alumna to Rise Above Poverty, Earn Doctorate

A native of Colombia, South America, Dr. Mabel Eliana Lamprea grew up with extended family—the oldest of 23 grandchildren. Her parents barely finished elementary school but gave her a love for reading and learning. She began a journey that years later brought her to Gardner-Webb University, where she earned a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and received the Darlene J. Gravett Citizen Scholar Award. The award is given to a graduate student for scholarly research that has the potential to make an improvement to society. It is named in honor of Dr. Darlene J. Gravett, long-time dean of the GWU Graduate School and Associate Provost Emerita.

Trombonist Mike Kris Featured in Distinguished Artist Concert on Jan. 18

Trombonist Mike Kris will be in concert on Jan. 18 at Gardner-Webb University as part of the Distinguished Artist Series. Co-sponsored by the Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill Fund, the concert will be at 8 p.m. in Dover Chapel. He will also present a free masterclass for low brass students from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Chapel.

Summer Hess, a 2006 alumna of Gardner-Webb University, has actively promoted the concept of community since her days on campus. Not just a word to describe a place on a map, her goal is to create a sense of community by bringing people together, building strong relationships, and impacting lives in a positive way.

GWU Officials Announce Appointment of New Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Gardner-Webb University officials are excited to announce that Dr. Karen Aubrey, of LaGrange, Ga., has been named to the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs. Her predecessor, Dr. Ben Leslie, will be returning to the classroom to serve in the School of Divinity as professor of theology and ethics. Aubrey’s appointment comes after a national search conducted with the assistance of Myers-McRae Executive Search Firm. Aubrey begins her responsibilities at GWU on March 21, 2022.

James G. Martin Center Recognizes Gardner-Webb’s General Education Requirements

Gardner-Webb University’s core academic requirements, which provide students with a foundational knowledge for leadership and service, recently received recognition from the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal. The center, which is a nonprofit institute dedicated to improving higher education in North Carolina and the nation, praised Gardner-Webb for being the only school in North Carolina to earn an “A” on the annual “What Will They Learn?®” study by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA).

Gardner-Webb Distinguished Artist Series Presents Carolina Crown’s Matt Harloff on Jan. 13

Matt Harloff, senior brass instructor for Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, will give a masterclass at Gardner-Webb University as part of the Distinguished Artist Series. The program will be on Thursday, Jan. 13, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in Blanton Auditorium. A former student of GWU Professor Tim Hudson, Harloff has built CrownBRASS into one of the elite programs in the country. The Carolina Crown Brass Section has been awarded the Jim Ott Memorial Award for Excellence in Brass several times, and Carolina Crown is a consistent Drum Corps International (DCI) World Class Finalist.

Gardner-Webb University Announces New Director of Athletic Bands

Officials at Gardner-Webb University have named Sarah Fabian as the director of Athletic Bands. Fabian is originally from Baltimore, Md. However, she currently resides in Storm Lake, Iowa as the director of Bands at Buena Vista University. Fabian has an extensive history in the drum and bugle corps circuit. She currently works with the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, a performance group within Drum Corps International.

GWU Alumna Eva Whittington Self, ’83, Trusted God With Her Broken Pieces

A car accident 43 years ago on a snowy country road in Concord, N.C., changed the future for Eva Whittington Self. After a week in the hospital, the 17-year-old learned that she would never walk again. She could have turned away from her faith, but the Gardner-Webb University 1983 alumna moved closer to God.

Dr. Gerald Keown Remembered by GWU Community for His Passion to Teach and Serve

The Gardner-Webb University community is remembering the contributions and legacy of Dr. Gerald Keown, who passed away on Dec. 14. Keown was professor emeritus of Biblical Studies and the former associate dean of the Gardner-Webb University M. Christopher White School of Divinity. He began his tenure at GWU in 1996 as a professor of Old Testament Interpretation and served as associate dean from 2006 to 2019.

GWU Student Success Receives Grant from North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities

Gardner-Webb University is one of eight schools to receive a $5,000 Minority Male Mentoring Grant from North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU). Funding was provided by the Council of Independent Colleges and Universities and was matched, in large part, by the VF Foundation, the grant-making organization funded by VF Corporation, a manufacturer of apparel, footwear and accessories. Other NCICU schools receiving the grants are Catawba College, Chowan University, Davidson College, Guilford College, High Point University, Livingstone College, and Queens University.

Gardner Webb The Magazine and Spark Publications Win National Honor

The 2020 edition of Gardner-Webb The Magazine, the official magazine for Gardner-Webb University, and its production partner, SPARK Publications of Charlotte, N.C., have received a silver Davey Award. The Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA) selected winners for the annual awards from over 2,000 entries from across the U.S. and around the world. For 17 years, the Davey Awards has honored the finest creative work from the best small shops, firms, and companies worldwide.
