    Gardner-Webb University and Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) officials signed agreements on April 18 that simplify the transfer process between the schools. The “Bulldog Bound” direct-entry admission program will provide a seamless transition for CVCC students entering Gardner-Webb.

    The Gardner-Webb Department of Communication, Art and Design will celebrate its annual Senior Showcase with a reception on April 27 in the Tucker Student Center. The event will be a walk-through style from 4 to 6 p.m. with works shown in the Pouryousefi Art Gallery as well as the seniors showcasing their various projects in booths set up in Tucker. Light refreshments will be served.

    A new interactive tool created by the editors of The New York Times ranks Gardner-Webb University No. 1 for campus safety on its list of 26 public and private colleges in North Carolina. The Times chose 883 U.S. colleges for its rating scale, selecting only those schools that graduate more than 50 percent of their students.

    Beginning in May, the Gardner-Webb University Housing and Residence Education office is offering a new housing option for single graduate students. University Commons Apartment Building B has been designated for the growing population of graduate students wanting to live on campus.

    On April 20, Gardner-Webb alumni, friends and longtime supporters can join together to make history. The Eighth Annual Double Dawg Day begins at midnight on April 20. For 24 hours, everyone can contribute to surpass last year’s total and break the record for the eighth year in a row.

    The Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) is offering qualified rising juniors an opportunity to enroll in the program at Gardner-Webb University. By attending one of three Basic Camps held this summer at Fort Knox, Ky., students become eligible to enroll in the final two-year Advanced Army ROTC program.

Fresh off Big South Championships in Women’s Basketball and Football, a Southern Conference individual title in Wrestling, and a Men’s Tennis Big South regular season conference title, GWU is announcing another major step forward: the Gardner-Webb Bulldog Club has now grown to its largest membership total in 31 years.

    Gardner-Webb University was one of several schools that Jalen Fearrington visited during his college search. As he met and talked with people on the GWU campus, he realized that he had found his college home for the next four years. “When I toured Gardner-Webb, I just knew this was the place,” he reflected.

    GWU Alumna Sherika A. Montgomery Named Commissioner of The Big South Conference

    The Big South Conference has named Sherika A. Montgomery, a two-time Gardner-Webb University alumna, as its new commissioner following a national search. Montgomery, who played basketball at GWU and served as a Big South staff member from 2010-17, becomes the fourth commissioner in the history of the Big South. She officially begins her duties on May 15. She replaces Kyle Kallander, currently the second-longest tenured NCAA Division I multisport conference commissioner. He is retiring after 27 years and will be inducted into the Big South Conference Hall of Fame on June 1.

    David and Marie Brinkley, longtime donors who have contributed to the advancement of Gardner-Webb University, continue to see their recent investment flourish. The Brinkley Amphitheater, a 900-seat venue, is progressing.

    Gardner-Webb University students brought home $12,700 in scholarships and prize money from the national Alpha Chi convention in Albuquerque, N.M., March 30-April 1. The convention is an annual celebration of academic scholarship bringing together Alpha Chi chapters from across the country to share research, network with other scholars, engage with keynote speakers, and earn recognition for academic and creative accomplishments.

    The Gardner-Webb University Department of Music is hosting Trumpet Summit 2023 on Tuesday, April 4. A masterclass with three distinguished trumpeters will be held at 4 p.m., and a concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Both the masterclass and the concert are free and held in Dover Chapel.

    In 2019, Gardner-Webb University’s College of Education launched the Teacher Assistant (TA) to Teacher Program in response to meeting the critical teacher shortage in North Carolina. Since then, enrollment in the online degree program in Elementary Education has grown from 71 to 172 students.

    Once again, Big South Corporate Partner Sunbelt Rentals is offering scholarships to Big South students entering their final semesters as an undergraduate. Applications for the scholarship are now being accepted on www.BigSouthSports.com under the “Sunbelt Rentals Scholarship” tab on the home page, which also includes the criteria for the award. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, April 11, 2023.

    Gardner-Webb University is offering both traditional and online courses for the 2023 Summer Terms. By coming to the Boiling Springs campus or to GWU’s Charlotte Center for either one or two of the terms, students can make progress toward their degrees while learning from professors in smaller classroom settings.

    Professional communicators took over classes in Gardner-Webb University’s Department of Communication, Art and Design (CAD) on March 22 for the first Professional Takeover Day. The guests represented print and broadcast journalism, social media and public relations. During the day, they participated in panel discussions that focused on the theme: “Cultivate, Connect, and Create Your Career Game Plan.” Students also had an opportunity to meet one-on-one with Dedrick Russell, a recruiter from Gray Television.

    Kendal Vest, an exercise science major from Shady Spring, W.Va., was crowned Miss Gardner-Webb 2023 on March 26. Nursing major Grace Fort, of Monroe, Ga., was first runner-up, and Alyssa Wilkie, of Bostic, N.C., also a nursing major, was second runner-up.

    The Honors Experience at Gardner-Webb University, offered July 16-21, introduces academically gifted and talented students in grades nine through 11 to life on the GWU campus. The students stay in dorms, eat in the Caf and attend classes and chapel programs. Students who are accepted into the program are automatically qualified to compete for Gardner-Webb’s Ignite Excellence Scholarship.

    Gardner-Webb University is home to one of North Carolina’s most comprehensive nursing programs that includes associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Students who desire to enter the field of nursing or those who want to further their careers are choosing the GWU Hunt School of Nursing. Enrollment in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) has grown from 14 to 73 in recent years, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) has increased from 47 in 2019 to 96 in 2023.

    The celebration of Women’s History Month is not only a time to reflect on famous women of the past, but also provides an opportunity to honor those who quietly make a difference in their own communities. One of Gardner-Webb University’s history-makers was Fredia Lawrence-King, a trailblazer in women’s sports. While reflecting on her accomplishments, Fredia said the two women who impacted her life with their integrity, character and Christian beliefs are Lola Lawrence and Karen Smith.

    Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William Downs has announced the recipient of the President’s Early Career Award for 2023. Dr. Erin Cook, assistant professor and program coordinator for human services, was selected for the honor based on her productivity in scholarship, creative discovery, and instruction that exceeds expectations.
