GWU and Video Production Partner, Kim Brattain Media, Win Silver Telly Award

Gardner-Webb University and its video production partner, Kim Brattain Media (KBM) in Charlotte, N.C., won a Silver Telly Award for the video, “This is Gardner-Webb Football.” Produced during 2020, the film was created to build excitement for the fall 2020 football season.
Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps Returns to Gardner-Webb for Training Camp

After cancelling camp and its touring season last summer, Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps will return to Gardner-Webb University on June 5 for an intense month of learning. The group, which includes 184 members, 40 teaching staff, and 10 administrators plus athletic training staff, will be on campus until July 10.
Gardner-Webb Honors Fallen Alumni During Its First Memorial Day Prayer Service

Gardner-Webb University held its first Memorial Day Prayer Service on May 28 in front of E.B. Hamrick Memorial Hall. The event honored the heroes—from the GWU community and elsewhere—who gave their lives in service to their country.
Alumna Shares Her GWU Marching Band Experience with Area Band Directors

Julia DeSerio, 2018 alumna and current Miss Gastonia, loved music so much that she participated in both chorus and band programs throughout high school and as a student at Gardner-Webb University. Recently, DeSerio, spoke at a dinner for marching band directors about the relaunch of the GWU Bulldog Marching Band program.
GWU Will Rededicate Hamrick Hall During Its First Memorial Day Service on May 28

Gardner-Webb University will hold its first Memorial Day Prayer Service on Friday, May 28, in front of E.B. Hamrick Memorial Hall to remember those from the GWU community and others who have died in military service to their country. Tracy Jessup, vice president for Christian Life and Service and senior minister to the University, will lead the event, which begins at 11:30 a.m.
Members of Gardner-Webb Alpha Chi Participate in Virtual National Convention

Gardner-Webb University Alpha Chi members recently participated in the National Convention, which was held virtually this year. Rising senior Grace Burgin, of Iron Station, N.C., was awarded a Region III scholarship. A biology major, Burgin presented a paper that examined how fetal nutrition and development are affected by a mother’s participation in fad diets. She conducted her research through the GWU Summer Undergraduate Research Scholar program.
GWU Webb Connections Panel Discusses Trends in Christian Higher Education

Downs welcomed a panel of guests to discuss, “A Revival in Christian Higher Education: Building A Bigger Tent.” Webb Connections is an informative series hosted by Downs and featuring experts discussing topics of national, regional and local interest.

GWU 10-Month MBA Students Achieve Success in Global Strategy Game

Utilizing knowledge gained from classes in the 10-month MBA program, three Gardner-Webb University students experienced success in The Business Strategy Game (BSG), an online exercise in management. Taught by Dr. Christi Sutton, assistant professor of business administration, the students—Karlyn Armsworthy, Venu Nagalla, and Manuela Amanovic—placed their company, H Traction Athletics, into the top 100 performers. They competed against 1,589 teams from 99 colleges and universities located around the world.
The Honors Experience Introduces High-Achieving High School Students to Gardner-Webb

High-achieving high school students who want a preview of college life are invited to attend The Honors Experience from July 18-23 on the main campus of Gardner-Webb University. This one-week college immersion program is for academically gifted and talented students who are currently in the ninth- through 11th-grade. Participants are automatically qualified to compete in the Gardner-Webb Ignite Excellence Scholarship program—the highest honor includes full tuition as well as room and board, totaling over $30,000 per year.
Gardner-Webb Announces Recipients of Summer Undergraduate Research Grants

The Summer Undergraduate Research Scholars Program is specifically designed for students who are looking to broaden their horizons during the summer months. This summer, eight students have been awarded grants to stay on campus and work with a mentor to pursue their academic interests. Over a five-week period, they are expected to work 40 hours a week on their projects.

Gardner-Webb University recently recognized undergraduate students for academic excellence on the 67th Academic Awards Day. Winners of these awards exemplify the University’s core values of faith, service and leadership in their classrooms and communities.

In honor of the award, each student may choose one book for purchase by Gardner-Webb’s Dover Memorial Library. The book will be inscribed with the student’s name and the date of the award recognition.

To our readers: Gardner-Webb University celebrates a historic milestone in 2021—the 50th anniversary of senior college status. Transitioning to a four-year college in 1971 was the result of 10 years of planning and meeting goals. To celebrate this anniversary, Gardner-Webb will publish a series of articles highlighting the stories of former faculty, staff, alumni and supporters who experienced this significant achievement.

Dr. Tony Eastman, professor emeritus of history, came to Gardner-Webb in 1966 expecting to teach at the junior college level. Not long after his arrival, he began hearing of a possible transition to a four-year college.
Gardner-Webb and Richmond Community College Officials Expand Co-Admission Agreements

Gardner-Webb University officials recently expanded co-admission agreements with Richmond Community College (RichmondCC). Leaders from the two institutions recently signed “Bulldog Bound,” a direct-entry admission program.

Described by her colleagues as an integral part of the College of Education, Dr. Cindy McKinney is being remembered for her Christian spirit and the contributions she made during her 25 years at Gardner-Webb University. McKinney, a native of Rutherford County, N.C., passed away on April 26, 2021.
After Popularity on Online Writing Platform, GWU Alumna Will Publish First Novel

In the fall of 2022, Brianna Joy Crump, a Gardner-Webb University alumna, will accomplish a goal she’s worked toward since middle school. Her book, “The Culled Crown,” will be published by Wattpad Books. Crump received undergraduate and graduate degrees in English from GWU. In 2017, she earned her bachelor’s with an emphasis in creative writing and in 2020, she completed her master’s with a concentration in writing. She is also employed as residence hall director for Decker Residence Hall.
Distinguished Artist Series and Theatre Arts Department Present GWU Alumnus Dove Dupree

The Gardner-Webb University Distinguished Artist Series, co-sponsored by the Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill Fund and The Department of Theatre Arts, will present Dove Dupree, a 2013 GWU alumnus, actor, poet and spoken word artist, for two programs on April 29 in Dover Theatre. At 3 p.m., he will lead a poetry workshop and at 6:30 p.m., a poetry showcase.
Gardner-Webb Officials Name New Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

Officials at Gardner-Webb University have named Dr. Shawn E. Holt as the new Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Since 2016, Holt has served as professor and chair of the Department of Natural Science and Mathematics at Richard Bland College (RBC), a branch of William & Mary, in Petersburg, Va. He will begin his new position at Gardner-Webb on July 1.
Gardner-Webb’s Model UN Team Makes History at Virtual Event

The Model UN team from Gardner-Webb University made history recently at the virtual Southern Regional Model UN (SRMUN) based in Charlotte, N.C. The six members, representing the Republic of Korea, brought home GWU’s first overall team award. Additionally, the duo of Rob Elovecky and Eliza Gunson were awarded Most Diplomatic and Best Delegation, while Grace Burgin and Melissa “Nani” Perez worked together and were awarded Most Diplomatic in their committee.

Gardner-Webb President Names New Vice President of Finance and Administration

After a national search conducted by Buffkin/Baker, Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William M. Downs has named Tim Shuey as vice president for Finance and Administration, effective June 1. Shuey comes to GWU from The Pennsylvania State University in State College, where he was the financial officer for the College of Engineering.
