GWU Degree Completion Program Recognizes Student with Community Engagement Award

Through Gardner-Webb University’s fully-online Teacher Assistants to Teachers program, Heather Foushee is earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education without giving up the job she loves. A teacher assistant in the third grade at Vass (N.C.) Lakeview Elementary, Foushee expects to graduate in 2024.
Eight GWU Students Receive Summer Undergraduate Research Grants

The Gardner-Webb University Summer Undergraduate Research Scholars Program has awarded grants to eight students for five weeks of focused research outside the boundaries of the classroom. The grants provide room and board on campus for students as they work with faculty mentors or faculty collaborators in any academic discipline.
Gardner-Webb Remembers Fallen Soldiers During Memorial Day Prayer Service

North Carolina District 44 Senator Ted Alexander spoke at Gardner-Webb University’s Memorial Day Prayer Service on Friday, May 27. He urged those gathered to remember the soldiers who died and the American principles they sacrificed to protect. The service was held in front of E.B. Hamrick Memorial Hall on Quinn Circle, which was built in 1925 and dedicated to the memory of three fallen soldiers. At last year’s Memorial Day service, it was rededicated to include two more alumni who died while serving their country.

L’Mia Littlejohn, of Shelby, N.C., transferred to Gardner-Webb in 2021, because after attending a larger university, GWU’s friendly campus felt like home. She said the smaller environment has provided more opportunities to form meaningful relationships with others.

Gardner-Webb University will observe Memorial Day on Friday, May 27, at 11:30 a.m. with a prayer service in front of E.B. Hamrick Memorial Hall on Quinn Circle. The guest speaker for the program is N.C. District 44 Senator Ted Alexander, of Shelby, N.C. The public is welcome to attend this event to remember those who lost their lives in service to the country.

With the education and opportunities he received at Gardner-Webb University, alumnus, Will Braunlich, ’20, does what he loves. He is the host of a movie review show that airs on the local cable TV in Simsbury, Conn., and on YouTube. He also recently started a job as a paraprofessional in the special education department at the local middle school.
Wake Tech and Gardner-Webb University Officials Announce New Transfer Partnership

In a special online ceremony, Wake Tech Community College and Gardner-Webb University signed multiple articulation agreements making it possible for Wake Tech students who earn one of 10 Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degrees to complete a Bachelor of Science degree online with Gardner-Webb.

Gardner-Webb and Cleveland Community College Sign Transfer Agreement for Exercise Science

Officials at Gardner-Webb University and Cleveland Community College (CCC) in Shelby, N.C., recently signed an agreement to establish a transfer admission promise program for CCC students who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in the Traditional Undergraduate Program at Gardner-Webb. Students who receive an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in health and fitness science at CCC will be able to transfer seamlessly to Gardner-Webb.

A family that has enthusiastically supported Gardner-Webb for more than a decade is making another transformational gift to the University. David and Marie Brinkley are providing the lead gift for a new amphitheater complex, which will be constructed on the former Hardee’s location, 206 South Main Street. Gardner-Webb purchased the 1.78-acre property in January 2021.

Gardner-Webb Men’s Golfer Zack Byers Honored with NCAA Selection Show Watch Party on May 4

In the 1970s, Gardner-Webb University earned national recognition for the men’s golf program under legendary head coach Garland Allen. Next week, Gardner-Webb will once again be in the national spotlight as men’s golfer Zack Byers waits to hear where he will play in the NCAA Regionals. Byers, a Shelby (N.C.) High School graduate, is the first Gardner-Webb golfer to qualify for an NCAA Regional, doing so on the strength of his recent Big South Conference individual title—and accompanying automatic bid.

The 10 Gardner-Webb University students who participated in a mission trip to Lake Charles, La., over spring break were determined and dedicated. They endured a nearly 15-hour drive in a van to reach their destination, where they woke up at 7 every morning to go work on four houses. They slept in a church and showered in a trailer.
Gardner-Webb Phi Beta Lambda Chapter and Members Win Awards at State Conference

Two students and faculty advisors from the Gardner-Webb University Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) recently attended the North Carolina PBL State Leadership Conference held in Charlotte. Although Gardner-Webb has not sent a delegation to the event in 24 years, both students won awards, and the chapter received first place in the Western Region for the Largest Local Chapter Membership.
