World Relief High Point Organization Representative to Speak at Gardner-Webb on March 4

The Dimensions program at Gardner-Webb University is pleased to announce Joe McCann, church engagement and volunteer coordinator at World Relief High Point (WRHP), as a distinguished speaker. McCann will discuss Human Trafficking Awareness Week with students and community members on Tuesday, March 4 at 9:25 a.m. in the Paul Porter Arena, located inside the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC). Established in 1992, World Relief High Point (WRHP) is a non-profit organization based in High Point, N.C. that partners with the local church and community to assist refugee families by providing support as they adjust to their new lives in America.

SCORE International Executive Director to Speak at Gardner-Webb

The Dimensions program at Gardner-Webb University is pleased to welcome the executive director at SCORE International John Zeller as a distinguished speaker. Zeller, who is also the chaplain for the Tampa Bay Yankees and the Saint Leo University baseball team, will share the Word on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 9:25 in the Paul Porter Arena, located inside the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC). For over 20 years, Zeller has served on the Board of Directors at SCORE International under the direction of its founder, Ron Bishop.

Black History Month Offers Opportunity to Examine Christian Heritage

Black History Month offers an opportunity to reflect upon the significance of religion and the early church in Africa, which some historians believe goes back to the early days of Biblical history. Dr. Eddie Stepp, chair and associate professor of the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy at Gardner-Webb University, says the roots of Christianity are much more African than European. “Although we don’t have many references to Africa in the New Testament, we do see the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts chapter eight,” said Stepp.

Gardner-Webb Department of Music Welcomes Carolina Brass in Concert

Gardner-Webb University’s School of Performing and Visual Arts music department presents Summit Recording artists Carolina Brass, in concert Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Kathleen Dover Theatre, located in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC). The special opening act will be Ol’ 74, an 18-member jazz ensemble, from Rutherford County, N.C. Carolina Brass offers a wide variety of programs, including classical and contemporary works, medieval and renaissance music, and pop programs encompassing Broadway hits, jazz, Dixieland, big band, and other popular genres.

GWU Career Development Office Plans Student Disorientation Week at Tucker Student Center

Each year, incoming students are welcomed to the Gardner-Webb campus with an orientation that marks the start of their undergraduate educational journey. As the months turn to years, many begin to face the anxieties of entering the ‘real world,’ for which they have often had little preparation. To help students acclimate to life away from college, the GWU Office of Career Development will host “Student Disorientation Week” from Feb. 24 – 27 in the Tucker Student Center.

GWU Athletic Trainers Plan School Benefit in Honor of National Athletic Training Month

Students at Crest Middle School will soon benefit from a school supplies drive planned in honor of National Athletic Training Month, observed each year during the month of March. Gardner-Webb University’s Athletic Training department is planning the drive to help local students and to educate members of the community about the athletic training profession. GWU Athletic Trainers Stephenie Stark and Ally Connally are helping promote the drive, which is planned Feb. 22 through March 7.

Community Invited to Annual Gardner-Webb Health Fair on March 4

Dozens of local healthcare providers and organizations will be on hand to promote healthy living at Gardner-Webb’s annual health fair, scheduled for Tuesday, March 4 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Tucker Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. Every year, the GWU Health Fair enables students and members of the community to build relationships with local health agencies, promoting awareness about the latest health-related trends and offering the knowledge and resources necessary to pursue healthy lifestyles.

Gardner-Webb Team of Students Finishes Second Overall at Statewide Ethics Bowl

A team of students from Gardner-Webb University finished second during this year’s North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Ethics Bowl. The event was held at Campbell Law School in Raleigh, N.C., and featured 20 colleges and universities, including these names that Gardner-Webb faced head to head – Campbell (Buies Creek), North Carolina Wesleyan (Rocky Mount), Wingate, and this year’s champion, Wake Forest (Winston-Salem). This was the third year for the relatively new event, and GWU has participated each year.

Gardner-Webb University Participates in National Eating Disorder Awareness (NEDA) Week

n an effort to encourage the prevention of eating disorders and body image issues, Gardner-Webb University will be participating in National Eating Disorder Awareness (NEDA) Week, Feb. 23 through March 1. This year’s NEDA theme is “Everybody Knows Somebody.” NEDA is a collective effort of volunteers, including health professionals, students and educators, who are committed to raising awareness of the dangers surrounding eating disorders and the importance of early intervention and treatment.

Annual Gardner-Webb Undergraduate Art Exhibit’s Best of Show Winners Announced

The Gardner-Webb University School of Performing and Visual Arts’ largest exhibit of they year, the Annual Undergraduate Exhibit, announced the results of its judged competition. The exhibit is on display in the Communication Studies Hall Gallery through Feb. 28. The exhibit consists of work from undergraduate students who have taken a wide variety of art studio class.

National Random Acts of Kindness Week Reminds Us to Support Others

National Random Acts of Kindness Week is recognized Feb. 10 – 16 as a time to do something nice for others. This event is something that Gardner-Webb University believes in trying to model throughout the year and hopes that administrators, faculty, staff, and students, encourage one another to do their part in lending a helping hand to those in need. “At Gardner-Webb, we encourage our students to participate in the organized institutional service opportunities we offer,” said Stephanie Richey Capps, director of Student Leadership Development and Community Engagement.

Gardner-Webb Football Signs 17 New Recruits for 2014-2015 Season

Gardner-Webb football announced a 17-man recruiting class Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA recruiting period for the sport. The 2014 haul capped the first full recruiting cycle for head coach Carroll McCray, who recently completed a successful first season in charge of the Runnin’ Bulldogs. As the faxes rolled in on Wednesday, success was evident once again for McCray and his staff.

Gardner-Webb University Opera Returns with The Old Maid and The Thief

Gardner-Webb University’s School of Performing and Visual Arts presents The Old Maid and The Thief: A Grotesque Opera in 14 Scenes, Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 13-15 at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2:30 p.m. in the Dover Theatre, located in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation (LYCC). The stage performers and orchestra members for the opera consist of GWU students and community participants. Dr. Megan McCauley, GWU Director of Opera Theatre and assistant professor of voice is directing the opera, which was written by Gian Carlo Menotti.

Nicki Koziarz of Proverbs 31 Ministries to Speak at Gardner-Webb

Busy with the responsibilities of being a wife, mother of three, speaker and writer, Nicki Koziarz still maintains a focus on Jesus and her calling in life, which is to spread the redemptive message of Christ. The Matthews, N.C., resident will share the Gospel at the Dimensions program with students on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 9:25 a.m. in the Paul Porter Arena, located inside the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC). Koziarz is passionate about bringing people closer to God and being a voice of truth in her generation.

An opening reception featuring refreshments is planned for Thursday, Feb. 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Communication Study Hall Gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Acclaimed Youth Pastor, Son of Southern Baptist Convention President Visits Gardner-Webb

The Dimensions program at Gardner-Webb University is pleased to present Chip Luter, the pastor of youth and young adults at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church (FABC) in New Orleans, La. Luter will share the gospel in a compelling message on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 9:25 a.m. in the Paul Porter Arena, located inside the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC). Luter found his calling in August 2001, when he decided to become a minister of the gospel of Christ.

Gardner-Webb University to Host Distinguished Faculty Concert Featuring Historic Compositions

Gardner-Webb University’s School of Performing and Visual Arts presents a Distinguished Artist/Faculty Concert featuring the combined talents of Calin Lupanu, Monica Boboc, Tanja Bechtler, and Piotr Swic on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. in Blanton Auditorium, located in Hamrick Hall. All four performers serve as adjunct professors in the music division of the GWU School of Performing and Visual Arts. This event is free and open to the public with optional donations in support of the music program.

Recent Court Case Raises Awareness About Dangers of Libel in Social Media

Each year, Gardner-Webb University Department of Communications and New Media Professor Dr. Joseph Webb teaches students about media law and how to navigate the sometimes-murky waters of social media publishing platforms. Webb recently offered insight into a landmark case involving a celebrity, her attorney, and Twitter. In January, a civil court jury declared that shock-rocker Courtney Love was not guilty of libel for comments she posted on Twitter in 2010 against her former attorney, Rhonda Holmes.

Cleveland County Schools Superintendent to Take on New Role at Gardner-Webb University

A man with both a heart for his hometown community and a desire to help future school administrators will transition to the next phase of his successful career with a faculty position at the Gardner-Webb University Graduate School of Education beginning in August of this year, university officials announced Jan. 31. Dr. Bruce Boyles of Kings Mountain, N.C. has served as the superintendent for Cleveland County Schools since January 2007 and recently revealed his retirement plans, effective June 30 of this year. But while he lays down his role as the county’s top school administrator, Boyles will begin a new journey as associate professor of education for Gardner-Webb, an opportunity that will allow him to expand upon his two years of experience as an adjunct professor for the University.

Former GWU Professor, Graduate School Dean, and Associate Provost Pens Memoir

A former English professor, graduate school dean, and associate provost at Gardner-Webb University is unveiling her memoir, “Army Brat, Army Bride, Civilian: A Life,” in which she shares the benefits and drawbacks to military living and the challenges her family later faced as civilians. Dr. Darlene Gravett has experienced just about everything the military life has to offer, including countless relocations, deployments, and transitions. “I always knew I wanted to write a book,” shared Gravett, a self-proclaimed Army brat.

Gardner-Webb University Business Classes Offer Services to Local Businesses

Gardner-Webb University’s Godbold School of Business senior seminar classes recently offered assistance that helped guide the direction of local businesses, allowing students valuable hands on experience in planning and operating a business. Communities in Schools (CIS) of Cleveland County Thrift Store and Broad River Coffee and Cone, both located in Boiling Springs, N.C., were recipients of in depth analysis reports serving to benefit their operations. Over the past two semesters select classes at the Godbold School of Business served as consultants for these projects under the guidance of Oscar Zamora, a professor of business administration and management for the School.

Gardner-Webb University Celebrates Transformational Exercise Science Lab with Ribbon Cutting

Officials with Carolina Chiropractic Plus joined Gardner-Webb University administrators and faculty members on campus for a ribbon cutting and open house on Jan. 31 at the new Carolina Chiropractic Plus Human Performance Lab, located in Suttle Wellness Center. Gardner-Webb University’s aspiring exercise physiologists and other allied health professionals will be among the first to benefit from the brand new laboratory designed to shift healthcare emphasis from disease management to preventive care. The vision for an advanced human performance lab is now a reality, due in part to the lead gift by Carolina Chiropractic Plus of Shelby, N.C. along with significant contributions from the Nanney Foundation and the McNair Educational Foundation.

The concert is free and open to the public with an optional donation to support the music program. Prior to the show, Ackley will visit with students in a GWU distinguished artist master class.

Acts of faith, service and leadership are always on display at Gardner-Webb University and especially seen during Celebration Week, where the University community unites to worship and glorify the Lord. Hosted by Gardner-Webb’s Campus Ministries, the theme for this year’s student-led event is “What are We Celebrating?” It will include contributions from Jonathan Martin, a Gardner-Webb alum and lead pastor at Renovatus Church in Charlotte, N.C. The event will be held on campus Jan. 28-30.
