Boiling Springs Breaking Ground on New Town Hall, Police Station

The Town of Boiling Springs invites the community to attend a ceremony to celebrate the groundbreaking for a new town hall and police station. The event is set for July 25 at 3 p.m. at the site of the new structure at 114 E. College Ave. Town officials have worked with Talley and Smith Architecture of Shelby, N.C., for more than a year to design the new $2.8 million, 11,000-square-foot building.

Gardner-Webb Summer Commencement Ceremony Set for Aug. 4

Gardner-Webb University will award over 200 degrees during 2014 summer commencement exercises on Monday, Aug. 4. The ceremony is planned for 10 a.m. in Paul Porter Arena in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center, located on Gardner-Webb’s main campus. The University will confer degrees on 205 total graduates across traditional undergraduate, graduate and degree completion programs of study.

GWU School of Psychology and Counseling to Cohost Trauma Recovery Training

Preferred Choice Healthcare, in collaboration with the Gardner-Webb University School of Psychology and Counseling, is planning a unique three-day training from Aug. 15 through Aug. 17, in room 103 of Lindsey Hall on the GWU main campus. Facilitators will train individuals on the use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to effectively aid victims of trauma. According to training officials, EMDR is a cost-effective, non-invasive method of psychotherapy that is used to treat individuals with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other traumatic psychological experiences that have overwhelmed the brain’s natural resilience or coping capacity.

GWU, Cleveland Community College Partner to Aid Transfer Students

Gardner-Webb University and Cleveland Community College announced a partnership this week that will further ease the transfer process for students who complete certain degrees with coursework at both institutions. Officials for both schools signed agreements to create a seamless degree track for accounting, business administration, entrepreneurship, industrial management, and nursing students who begin their studies at Cleveland Community College and finish them in the University’s Degree Completion Program. The agreements, called Pathways to reference the structured paths of study between the two schools, formalize a degree partnership that already exists between GWU and CCC, according to officials.

GWU Alumni Experience Marathon Missions

Gardner-Webb University students and alumni regularly travel to foreign countries for short-term mission trips to share messages of God and humanity. A growing number of University family members are reaching deeper into missions by participating in a journey that takes them to 11 countries in 11 months. The World Race—organized by interdenominational agency Adventures in Missions—transports adults ages 21 to 35 on an international tour of different cultures, religious beliefs and global challenges.

GWU Alum, Campus Police Officer Showcases Woodwork

By day, Larry Thomas patrols Gardner-Webb University as a campus police officer, a job he has held for 36 years. After work, Thomas crafts wood into furniture and art, a hobby he has also enjoyed for nearly four decades. A 1974 GWU alumnus, Thomas’s first-ever woodworking exhibit is on display now through July 31 in the Tucker Student Center art gallery.

Gardner-Webb University Announces Establishment of “Hunt School of Nursing”

Officials are thrilled to announce a significant, undisclosed donation to the top-rated Gardner-Webb University School of Nursing. Dr. Jack and Mrs. Ruby Hunt, noted public servants and staunch supporters of a wide range of community projects, have committed a generous gift to the University to establish the Hunt School of Nursing. Gardner-Webb University President Dr. Frank Bonner believes the Hunt family represents community service at its finest, and the partnership with the University will benefit both current and future nursing students.

GWU Alum to Lead State Organization for Interpreters for Deaf

Gardner-Webb University alumnus Antwan Campbell ’03 was recently elected president of the North Carolina Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NCRID). His term began July 1, and his first official duty was representing the state of North Carolina July 1-6 at the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Regional Conference in Atlanta, Ga. “I am truly excited and humbled to have been elected president,” Campbell said.

GWU’s Dr. Jeff Hartman Offers Summer Vacation Exercise Suggestions

Summertime vacations bring a welcome break from everyday life that may even tempt some to skip their regular exercise routine. Still, vacations are no excuse to stop exercising, according to Dr. Jeffrey Hartman, associate professor of exercise science at Gardner-Webb. “The beauty of the smartphone and the latest apps coming out is that they make it easier to continue your exercise routine when you go away from home by finding some local resources,” Hartman said during a weekly exercise science program on Gardner-Webb’s WGWG.org.

GWU Announces Installation of Artificial Field Surface in Spangler Stadium

Gardner-Webb University has announced that a new artificial turf surface will be installed on Coach Norman Harris Field at Ernest W. Spangler Stadium. The announcement signals the first major renovation to the stadium since 2004, with the project set for completion in early August 2014. Officials say the turf will offer the University significant long-term field maintenance cost savings.

GWU Basketball Coaches Support Cancer Awareness, Research Organization

Gardner-Webb University women’s basketball coaches helped raise breast cancer awareness and research funding in a unique way this week. GWU Head Coach Rick Reeves and Assistant Coach Dominique Hudson participated in #Chillin4Charity, in which coaches challenge their peers to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and take an ice shower to support the organization. Coaches have 48 hours to answer the challenge.

GWU History Professor Talks Historic Civil Rights Act

In schools and restaurants, voting booths and employment lines, life changed drastically for Americans 50 years ago this summer. National leaders approved the Civil Rights Act on July 2, 1964. The legislation brought some sweeping changes to the country’s racial divisions, but it didn’t eliminate all boundaries, according to Gardner-Webb University Assistant Professor of History Dr. Joseph Moore.

Gardner-Webb Mourns Loss of School of Business Dean Emeritus

Gardner-Webb University Dean Emeritus Jim Crawley, instrumental in the successful growth and national recognition of the University’s business school, passed away Saturday, June 21 at the age of 84. Crawley began his tenure at Gardner-Webb in 1994, after retiring from Dupont, Inc. He served as the first dean of the University’s business school—during which the school moved into its current home in E.B. Hamrick Hall—as well as chairman of GWU’s undergraduate business program.

Wounded Healer: GWU Student’s Medical Trials Shape New Role in Helping Others

She climbs, spins, and drops—shifting gracefully in and out of mid-air poses supported by silk fabric—spiraling and twisting herself into intricate knots as she displays a delicate balance of beauty and strength. Gardner-Webb sophomore Aubry McMahon is an artist of aerial silks, a performance art closely resembling the acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil. Aerialists rely greatly on physical strength and skill, and while McMahon flourishes in her element, health has not always been on her side.

Gardner-Webb University to Launch Construction of New Softball Stadium

The Gardner-Webb University Department of Athletics is announcing plans for the construction of a new women’s softball stadium, to be built in the same location as the current field located on South Main Street in Boiling Springs. The facility will be named after lead donors David and Marie Brinkley, owners of Brinkley Financial Group, based in Kings Mountain, N.C. Brinkley Softball Stadium will include spacious new dugouts, permanent seating for 350 spectators, a concession stand, and press box, which will house a main working area and two broadcast booths to accommodate radio and video operations.

GWU’s Pittman Center Announces Partnership with Virginia Baptist Group

The Gardner-Webb University Pittman Center for Congregational Enrichment is announcing a new partnership with Christian Leaders Link, a leadership training entity of Virginia Baptists, located in Roanoke, Va. Beginning in July, the Pittman Center will provide resources for use by the Link. These funds will allow the two ministries to co-host workshops, conferences, and other non-degree training events during the year.

Carolina Crown to Perform Free Show at GWU

World-champion drum and bugle corps, Carolina Crown, will perform a free show Sunday, June 15, at Gardner-Webb University. More than 150 musicians with the South Carolina-based corps have called Boiling Springs home for the past month to rehearse the 2014 cosmic-themed show, “Out of This World.” Sunday’s show is set for 7-9 p.m. in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium at GWU.

Gardner-Webb Undergraduate Aids Malnourished Families in Guatemala

Ben Payne helps feed malnourished families several thousand miles from home. With the aid of his family and business principles he’s learned as a marketing major, the Gardner-Webb University senior has assisted in the development of a sustainable nutrition program in one of Guatemala’s many impoverished villages. It’s work that’s earned him recognition in the local community and a mission he hopes will be replicated in other countries around the world.

Gardner-Webb University Announces Purchase of Building for New College of Health Sciences

The Gardner-Webb University Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the purchase of a 53,500-square-foot building that will house the new College of Health Sciences. Officials from Cleveland County Healthcare System (CCHS) have confirmed the sale of Crawley Memorial Hospital, located at 315 W. College Ave., to Gardner-Webb University, effective later this month. The property is owned by Carolinas Healthcare System based in Charlotte, N.C.

Fifth Annual Summer Leadership Conference Set for July 28-29

The fifth annual Summer Leadership Conference, titled “Leadership in Action: A Formula for Success,” will feature distinguished keynote speaker Dr. Mark Edwards, the 2013 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year, National Superintendent of the Year, and Superintendent of Mooresville (N.C.) Graded School District. Scheduled for July 28-29 in the Tucker Student Center at Gardner-Webb University, the conference is sponsored by the School of Education’s Center for Innovative Leadership Development (CILD) and the Godbold School of Business Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship (CEE). Several sessions will be offered throughout the two-day event, each designed to offer information in the areas of teacher efficacy, organizational leadership, and research presentations.

GWU Alumna Shares Life Lessons in New Book “Living Among the Dying”

In the 18 months that Lynn Hamrick has been at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, N.C., she’s learned more about living than dying. “When I came to Hospice, I felt like people sometimes have the wrong idea,” she reflected. “They automatically think you are at death’s door, but I found out the people here are focused on making your life better. Hospice is not a place of gray gloom and whispered woes. It is a place of caring and living and peace.”

GWU Mourns the Loss of Professor Emeritus and Former Champion Golf Coach

Gardner-Webb University Professor Emeritus, Athletics Hall of Famer and two-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Golf Coach of the Year Dr. Garland Allen passed away Tuesday, June 3 at the age of 91. Allen began his tenure at Gardner-Webb in 1961 when the institution was still a junior college. During his first year, he served as an academic counselor.

The GWU Godbold School of Business presents the 9th annual B.E.S.T. (Bringing Executives and Students Together) Program from July 23-25. The program gives rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders an opportunity to learn from entrepreneurs and other community leaders
