Carolina Crown to Perform Free Show at Gardner-Webb University

Renowned drum and bugle corps Carolina Crown has shared its music with the Boiling Springs community during daily practices for the past four weeks. On Saturday, June 13, the ensemble of nearly 150 musicians will perform a polished 2015 tour program for the public during a free show at Gardner-Webb University. Carolina Crown, based in Fort Mill, S.C., brings some of the world’s best young musicians to Gardner-Webb each spring to rehearse in preparation for a tour that culminates in the Drum Corps International World Championship competition.

Gardner-Webb Program to Connect High School Students, Business Professionals

Gardner-Webb University’s Godbold School of Business invites local high school students to campus next month to learn about entrepreneurship, finance and marketing during the 10th annual B.E.S.T. (Bringing Entrepreneurs and Students Together) Program. The July 22-24 event will seek to encourage, educate and engage rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders by offering opportunities to learn professional skills from the community’s business leaders. “We try to add to the value of what these students are already learning at their high schools, taking those principles outside the classroom and teaching the students to apply what they know,” shared Dr. Anthony Negbenebor, dean of the Godbold School of Business.

GWU to Host LifeWay Kids Camps This Summer

Gardner-Webb will welcome more than 2,500 children and adults to the University during the next six weeks as the campus hosts a LifeWay Kids Christian camp series for the first time. CentriKid, a children’s ministry of the international Christian resources organization LifeWay, offers youth in grades three through six opportunities for Bible study, worship and recreational experiences. Camps are organized and led by teams of young adults, including college and seminary students, who help serve as directors, pastors and worship leaders.

Gardner-Webb University School of Education Receives National Accreditation

The Gardner-Webb University School of Education recently received accreditation for its educator-licensing programs under the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards. NCATE’s performance-based accreditation system for teacher preparation ensures that teacher candidates are prepared to make a difference in pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade (P-12) student learning environments. “A rigorous, comprehensive assessment process aligned with national standards confirms that we are preparing our students for excellence in improving P-12 student achievement in our community and throughout North Carolina,” reported Dr. Jeff Hamilton, director of assessment for the Gardner-Webb University School of Education.

Gardner-Webb University’s Online Offerings Earn Top Ranking in North Carolina

Gardner-Webb University is being recognized for exceptional web-based learning opportunities and was recently honored as a 2015 Top Online College in North Carolina by Affordable Colleges Online (ACO), based in Reno, Nev. Gardner-Webb ranked 15th out of 62 institutions of higher education in the state that offer online options, and the University was selected for the quality and value of its online programs. With a score of 90.85 percent, GWU ranked ahead of several larger institutions, including North Carolina State University (Raleigh, N.C.), North Carolina A&T University (Greensboro, N.C.), and Johnson & Wales University (Charlotte, N.C.). Less than eight points separated GWU from the number-one institution on the list, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

High School Students Prepare for Upcoming Learning Opportunities at Gardner-Webb

For dozens of high school students in Cleveland and Rutherford counties, this summer will offer unique opportunities for developing new insight into the practical application of principles they have learned throughout the school year. Through grants from the Stonecutter Foundation (Spindale, N.C.) and the Duke Energy Foundation (Charlotte, N.C.), Gardner-Webb University is planning five week-long academies, which will offer local students enrichment in the subjects of math, science and computer science. The Stonecutter Foundation will sponsor academies for participants from Rutherford County high schools.

Student Art on Display at Gardner-Webb

The creative talent of dozens of local school students is on display now at Gardner-Webb as the University hosts the Springmore Elementary Art Exhibit. About 70 artistic pieces by students in kindergarten through the fifth grade will be shown through June 6 in the Tucker Gallery inside the Tucker Student Center on campus. Exhibit entries include works composed of paint, colored pencil, crayon, marker and collage.

Gardner-Webb Mourns Loss of Former Business School Professor

Dr. Charles Tichenor brought a world of experience to Gardner-Webb University, and as a professor of business and distinguished corporation chief executive in the Godbold School of Business he offered a world of opportunities to his students. Tichenor, a U.S. Navy veteran and former international business executive, passed away May 19. He was 89.

Gardner-Webb University Hosts “Jump Start” for Incoming Students on May 29

The preparations have been made… the must-have items are checked off from lists… the months have turned to weeks and the weeks have turned to days. The clock is winding down for many teens as they prepare to leave the comforts of home in order to begin their new season of life as full-time college students. On May 29, before many have even graduated from high school, dozens of future students will take advantage of a GWU “Jump Start” day.

Gardner-Webb’s Online Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting Receives National Recognition

Gardner-Webb University’s online bachelor’s degree in accounting ranks No. 1 in the Carolinas and among the top 25 programs nationwide in a 2015 report by Online Accounting Degree Programs (OADP). The rankings are based on factors such as average tuition, career services, graduation rates and class size. GWU offers an online bachelor’s degree in accounting through its Degree Completion Program (DCP), which offers traditional undergraduate courses at convenient times and locations for working adults.

Contemporary Christian Band NewSong to Perform at Gardner-Webb University on June 20

Contemporary Christian music group NewSong will perform a concert on Saturday, June 20, on the campus of Gardner-Webb University. General admission tickets are available to the public for $5 each, and all proceeds will benefit local youth. The event is presented by the Shelby-based foothills chapter of Cross Trail Outfitters (CTO).

Gardner-Webb Professor Emerita Publishes Book of Poetry

Gardner-Webb Professor Emerita of English Dr. Joyce Brown has published a book of poetry to be released later this year. The former professor’s poems, part of a collection entitled “Bequest,” recall the childhood stories of her family. Brown received several prior honors for her writing, including the 2003 Second Place Danny Plattner Award for non-fiction; the 1999 James Still Poetry Award in the Appalachian Writers Association poetry contest; and 2002 Honorable Mention in the Appalachian Writers’ Association James Still poetry contest.

GWU Alumna Receives National Military Spouse Award

Just two months after she was named the Armed Forces Insurance (AFI) 2015 Army Spouse of the Year, a Gardner-Webb alumna has been recognized as the overall national winner. On May 8, Corie Weathers (’99) was chosen from among five other military branch nominees as the National AFI Military Spouse of the Year. Weathers and her husband, Capt. Matthew Weathers, a U.S. Army Chaplain currently stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga., met at Gardner-Webb.

Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps Returns to Gardner-Webb for Annual Training

Gardner-Webb University will welcome more than 150 student musicians and the sounds of a world-class drum and bugle corps this week as Carolina Crown returns to campus for its annual spring training. Carolina Crown, a contender each year for the Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championship, has partnered with Gardner-Webb since 2007 for practice and rehearsal space prior to its national tours. The organization expects to enjoy its stay on the Boiling Springs campus more than ever this year, shared Nancy Barth, Carolina Crown’s director of operations and tour manager.

Crossroads Festival to Entertain Families on May 16

Families are invited to enjoy food, crafts and fun activities on Saturday, May 16, as The Town of Boiling Springs hosts the third annual Crossroads Festival, sponsored by Gardner-Webb University, Piedmont Utilities and Turner Trucking. This year’s festival is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along South Main Street. Activities will include food vendors, craft and clothing merchants, free inflatable activities and rides, student dance performances, a fire department training demo, balloon entertainment and beginner archery lessons. “There will be something for every member of the family,” said Boiling Springs Town Manager Tom Hart.

Gardner-Webb Students Receive National Recognition on Annual Who’s Who List

Gardner-Webb University is pleased to announce that 25 students have been named to the 2014-15 “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Each year, more than 2,800 schools across the United States and the District of Columbia nominate students for the prestigious award. For consideration in the Who’s Who program, students must have an outstanding grade point average (GPA), participate in school organizations or leadership activities, be involved in the community, exhibit future leadership ability or potential, and meet any other requirements that the student’s member institution requires.

Gardner-Webb University Godbold School of Business Awards 2,000th Graduate Degree

Gardner-Webb University’s Godbold School of Business marked the awarding of its 2,000th graduate degree during commencement exercises on May 9, the latest milestone in an academic year full of regional and national recognitions for the school. The University awarded its first Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees in 1995, its first Master of Accountancy (MAcc) in 2002 and its first International Master of Business Administration (IMBA) degree in 2003. In the years since, the School of Business has awarded approximately 1,500 MBA degrees, more than 400 MAcc degrees and almost 100 IMBA degrees.

Gardner-Webb The Magazine and its production team are once again being recognized for national and international excellence among marketing and communications publications. The magazine was named a Platinum Winner in the annual Hermes Creative Awards competition, administered by the Association of Marketing & Communications Professionals (AMCP), which is based in Dallas, Texas. The GWU Office of Communications and Marketing earned platinum status for the print edition of Gardner-Webb The Magazine (Vol. 49, No. 2).

Gardner-Webb Recognizes Two Recipients with Honorary Doctorates During Commencement on May 9

Gardner-Webb University bestowed its highest recognition of merit, Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees, to C. Neal Alexander (Denver, N.C.) and Frank Stewart (Belmont, N.C.) during its Spring Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 9. GWU President Dr. Frank Bonner explained that the guidelines for awarding the honorary doctorate include the recipient’s embodiment of Gardner-Webb ideals, caring and Christian service; the awarding of the degree affirms the University’s values and honors individual achievements. “These guidelines are exemplified to the fullest degree by Neal Alexander and Frank Stewart in their personal, professional, church, and civic lives, and in innumerable leadership roles,” Bonner shared.

Gardner-Webb University Awards Degrees During Exercises on May 9

Gardner–Webb University hosted Spring Commencement exercises on Saturday, May 9, in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Nearly 600 graduates were honored during the two ceremonies. The morning ceremony featured nearly 300 graduates of Gardner-Webb’s Degree Completion Program (DCP) and the traditional undergraduate program.

Music Plays Major Role in Life of GWU Grad

After starting to play the piano at age two, Bonnie Scruggs has majored in music her entire life. This month she marks a milestone in her music education as she graduates from Gardner-Webb University with more than 200 hours of undergraduate coursework in two majors with three concentrations. GWU graduates normally complete 128 credit hours for a bachelor’s degree.

Run/Walk Honors Late Gardner-Webb Athletics Administrator Mike Roebuck

Hundreds of runners and walkers traveled a mile around Gardner-Webb University on April 30 to honor Mike Roebuck, an avid runner and former GWU athletics administrator who passed away earlier this year. The first “A Mile for Mike” honored Roebuck, who served Gardner-Webb for 20 years, first as director of financial aid and then as assistant athletics director for academic services. In addition to the run/walk, the event included comments by Roebuck’s family and GWU Vice President for Athletics Chuck Burch.

Gardner-Webb University honored outstanding faculty and staff members on May 1 during the annual “Apples and Accolades” program. Dr. Joseph Webb, professor of Communication & New Media and a faculty member since 2007, was recognized with the 2015 Excellence in Teaching Award. “He entertains and inspires his students with detailed descriptions and imaginative lectures,” said GWU President Dr. Frank Bonner.

Gardner-Webb The Magazine and its production team were recognized this week for national and international excellence among marketing and communications publications with a pair of awards from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA), based in New York, N.Y. The GWU Office of Communications and Marketing received two Communicator Awards for the print edition of Gardner-Webb The Magazine (Vol. 49, No. 1). The issue earned a 2015 Gold Award of Excellence in the category of cover design and a 2015 Silver Award of Distinction in the category of educational institution magazine.

Gardner-Webb University to Hold Spring Commencement Exercises on May 9

Gardner-Webb University will award over 600 degrees during the 2015 spring commencement exercises on Saturday, May 9. Ceremonies are planned for 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Paul Porter Arena of the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center, located on the campus of Gardner-Webb University. Of the two ceremonies planned, the ceremony at 10 a.m. will focus on the achievements of nearly 370 students in the traditional undergraduate and Degree Completion programs of study while the second ceremony at 3 p.m. will honor over 250 students who have successfully completed graduate programs.
