Release the Captives Bring Rory Tyer Band to GWU, Raise Money to Fight Child Labor

Chicago-based Rory Tyer Band, performed in Dover Theater on Wednesday, Nov. 18 to help raise money for an organization devoted to help rescuing children from child labor conditions in Ghana. Release the Captives, a Gardner-Webb club that focuses on raising awareness for modern day slavery and human trafficking, hosted and planned for the band to come to Boiling Springs as part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

This Friday from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., Gardner Webb students can bowl and watch movies for free at The Big E. The Big E is an entertainment outlet behind the Prime Outlets of Gaffney in Gaffney, S.C.

The university has activities and events, besides whitewater rafting at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, N.C. or Pancake Bingo; that can truly enrich the lives of college students; an example of such is studying abroad.

When questioning social activities in Shelby, N.C., Derek Soots, a sophomore at Gardner-Webb said, “What activity is there? There is a mall and Cookout.” This is a common response among the students at Gardner-Webb; not many students see Shelby as a hotspot to socialize with friends on the weekend. Many students stay on campus or go to Gaffney and Charlotte.
