Venom: Let There Be Carnage Might Fit the Bill for Fans of Comedy, Horror, and Beyond
Thoams Manning
As a follow-up to the 2018 film “Venom” directed by Ruben Fleischer, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” sees legendary motion-capture performance actor Andy Serkis settling into the director’s chair, with Tom Hardy returning as the titular antihero. Based on Marvel Comics, this particular corner of the universe is under the Sony umbrella, whereas the majority of other Marvel intellectual properties are supervised by Disney and its many divisions. Thus, for all intents and purposes, stories with the Eddie Brock/Venom character portrayed by Tom Hardy are considered to be outside the boundaries of the 25-film Marvel Cinematic Universe, and allowed more room to breathe creatively. Ultimately, I would say this is much to the benefit of Serkis’ film.

Alumni Spotlight: Gabriel Hoyle
Thomas Manning
“People tend to think from the outside looking into political organizing that getting involved is all about small networks, formal job opportunities, building good LinkedIn profiles, and applying to work on campaigns. But so much of it is just people who like working together, who have experience working together on previous projects, deciding to take up a new charge and deciding, ‘Hey, here’s another issue that we can address, or here’s another person that we can get elected.’ It’s really a lot about calling on the people you know who do good work and who care a whole lot.” – Gabriel Hoyle, GWU 2020

"Raya and the Last Dragon" is a Beautiful Package of Both Fresh and Familiar
Thomas Manning
Disney Animation’s latest production, “Raya and the Last Dragon,” comes from directors Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, along with co-directors Paul Briggs and John Ripa. A total of six writers are also credited – Qui Nguyen, Adele Lim, Briggs, Hall, Estrada, Ripa, Kiel Murray, and Dean Wellins. Projects with this many creative voices thrown together have been known to fall prey to tonal dissonance and narrative imbalances. Also taking into account the ambitious endeavor of introducing an audience to new characters, a new world, and new mythology and lore, the fact that “Raya” succeeds on so many levels is all the more impressive.
