    Madelyn Hicks, a high school junior, proudly held out the decorative cup she made with a 3D printer. A participant in the Stonecutter Foundation Computer Science Camp at Gardner-Webb University, she shared how she created the object and learned about 3D animation.

    Gardner-Webb Leads Big South Conference with 339 Students on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll

    Gardner-Webb placed 339 student-athletes to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, announced on Monday, July 31.

    To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently completed academic year. GWU had the fourthhighest percentage of eligible student-athletes named to the Honor Roll, with 76.87 percent (339- of-441) student-athletes earning the accolades. The Runnin’ Bulldogs led the conference with its 339 student-athletes earning the award, as the closest school to Gardner-Webb was Campbell with 265 student-athletes being named to the list.

    The Gardner-Webb University Student Development staff is preparing to welcome 500 new students to campus on Aug. 12. These new Runnin’ Bulldogs include first-year, commuters and transfer students. From 8 a.m. to noon, residential students will check in at Tucker Student Center and move into their residence halls.

    Gardner-Webb University officials are pleased to welcome 15-time Grammy winner Ricky Skaggs (https://rickyskaggs.com/) as the inaugural headline performer in the Brinkley Amphitheater. The concert is set during GWU Homecoming festivities on Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. General admission tickets are $35 and go on sale July 28.     A mission team from Gardner-Webb University discovered during their summer trip that it’s possible to make a difference in the lives of others without going abroad. Two faculty leaders and five students offered a “God’s Love in a Diaper Bag (https://www.kybaptist.org/church-missions/gods-love-from-a-diaper-bag/)” baby shower and new parent/young child education seminar for 30 low-income families in Jenkins, Ky. This rural area in southeastern Kentucky is in socioeconomic distress after the closure of its coal mines, compounded by a flood that hit in the summer of 2022.

    Head Football Coach Tre Lamb, the reigning Big South Conference Coach of the Year, has signed a contract extension, the Department of Athletics announced on Tuesday. This past season, Lamb led the Runnin’ Bulldogs to their first conference championship in 19 years and the program’s first-ever berth in FCS Playoffs.

    University President Dr. William M. Downs has named Greg Thiel the next head coach of Gardner-Webb’s track and field and cross country programs, the Department of Athletics announced on Monday. Thiel joins Gardner-Webb after most recently spending 10 seasons as the head coach at Southern Wesleyan University. Earlier in his career, Thiel spent six seasons as the head coach at the University of South Florida

    University President Dr. William M. Downs has named Tina Murphy the next head coach of Gardner-Webb’s women’s soccer program, the Department of Athletics announced on Friday. A former four-time national champion as a player at the University of North Carolina, Murphy joins Gardner-Webb after two seasons as the head coach at the University of South Carolina Aiken.

    Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Andrew T. Goodrich has named Kathleen Mirgon Crum the next head coach of Gardner-Webb’s women’s lacrosse program, the Department of Athletics announced on Wednesday. Mirgon Crum becomes the fourth head coach in program history.

    A team consisting of two Gardner-Webb University faculty members and seven students traveled to Athens, Greece, to provide medical care for refugees from the surrounding area. For eight days in May 2023, the GWU mission team collaborated with local missionaries to help and encourage the people in need of care. Each member of the team shared that they walked away from the trip having learned something about their faith, themselves, and the impact that their service can have on the lives of others.

    Eight new scholars received grants from the Summer Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (https://gardner-webb.edu/academics/enrichment-programs/summer-research-scholars/), one of Gardner-Webb University’s academic enrichment opportunities. Every year, the initiative allows a student to spend 40 hours a week working on a project for five weeks with the assistance of a Gardner-Webb professor. The students learn more in their fields and help advance the field itself. They also tap into the professors’ knowledge and experience on how to conduct and complete a scholarly project.

    As a summer intern at Trans World Radio (TWR) in Cary, N.C., Gardner-Webb University senior Emily White has received hands-on opportunities to develop her skills. A double major in marketing and communication studies, White is working with the Global Content Team as a content creator and social media contributor, assisting TWR partners in South Africa and Singapore. White learned about the ministry from her aunt, who served there 20 years.

    Gardner-Webb football unveiled new enhanced seating options for Runnin’ Bulldog fans for the 2023 season. More than 400 premium stadium seats with armrests, backs, and cupholders were installed in June and now populate Section 9, offering the best views of the 50- yardline and all the action on the field. Five of GWU’s 11-game slate this fall will be played at home in Boiling Springs’ Spangler Stadium:

    Two students from the Department of Natural Sciences at Gardner-Webb University have received grants for their research. They are the first students from the program to be awarded funding to conduct their studies. Seniors Marissa DiMatteo, of Granite Falls, N.C., and Katie Wilson, of Connelly Springs, N.C., are both majoring in biology with a biomedical sciences concentration.

    The final doctoral project journey is challenging, particularly after completing coursework. The Gayle Bolt Price School of Graduate Studies recently held its first doctoral project/dissertation retreat to support Gardner-Webb University students in this last phase of their program. Attending were 50 students from all doctoral programs (DBA, DNP, DMin, and EdD). The event, also sponsored by Dover Library and Graduate Admissions, was held at the GWU Charlotte Center.

    Officials at Gardner-Webb have named a new vice president for Finance and Administration—Mike Whiteman. He has 15 years of experience in higher education and his background includes work in public accounting, insurance and non-profit industries. He begins his duties at the University on July 24 and will report directly to GWU President Dr. William M. Downs.

    Faculty and staff from the Gardner-Webb University College of Health Sciences spent the last two weeks introducing students from Cleveland County Schools (CCS) to careers in healthcare. They are part of the CCS Rev Up Healthcare Experience, which is supported by a grant through federal COVID emergency relief funds, noted Rhonda Benfield, CCS district coordinator for Career and Technical Education (https://www.clevelandcountyschools.org/team_ccs/contact_us/departments/career_and_technical_education) (CTE).

    The 2023 Science Academy hosted by Gardner-Webb University and sponsored by Stonecutter Foundation in Spindale, N.C., introduced students to real-world applications of science, such as crime scene investigation and forensic anthropology. The 12 students also learned about the Department of Natural Sciences, the Human Performance Lab in the Department of Exercise Science and the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at Gardner-Webb.

    On June 19, 1865—over two years a!er the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863—Gen. Gordon Granger’s Union regiment marched into Texas to proclaim the joyous news that the enslaved were free. Since then, this date, Juneteenth (https://gardner-webb.edu/about/officesand- departments/diversity-inclusion/juneteenth/), has been celebrated as the ending of slavery in the United States and the freedom of African Americans to pursue education and achievement.

    Carolina Crown has once again joined the Gardner-Webb community to practice their newest show “The Round Table: Echoes of Camelot.” The members of the Drum Corp have been hard at work and can be seen or heard all over Gardner-Webb’s campus. They will perform a live show for the Gardner-Webb Community on June 17 in Spangler Stadium. The gates will open at 6 p.m. and the live performance will start at 8:30 p.m. Carolina Crown started in January 1988 as the Charlotte Drum Corps

    As a young Black American, Tyra Montour honors the history and accomplishments of early African Americans—who finally received the news of their freedom on June 19, 1865—the date now celebrated annually as Juneteenth (https://gardner-webb.edu/about/offices-anddepartments/ diversity-inclusion/juneteenth/). A 2016 GWU alumna, Montour received her bachelor’s degree in communication and media studies.

    Gardner-Webb Concert Choir Invited to Participate in Concert for 80th Anniversary of D-Day

    Today, as the world marks the 79th anniversary of D-Day, members of the Gardner-Webb Department of Music will watch the commemoration with special interest, because the Concert Choir and professors have been invited to participate in next year’s 80th anniversary of D-Day. They will join the historic observance in France by performing a memorial concert as a lead ensemble in an international choir.
