    The Gardner-Webb Marching Bulldogs begins its second season under the direction of Dr. Sarah Fabian, director of Athletic Bands, with new members and a new addition—a seven-member dance team. The 50 band members also include nine color guard and 34 musicians. They started practicing in early August and are eager to perform for football fans.

Amateur pitmasters —each touting their own secret recipe—will have a chance to heat up the smoker and win the first Bo’s Battle ’QUE at Gardner-Webb University.

    Students Invited to Participate in Mission Trips Across the U.S. and in Southern Africa

    The five mission trips planned by the Office of Christian Life and Service for 2023-2024 offer a variety of opportunities from construction and medical assistance to making children with a critical illness smile. Students can also choose from trips in the United States or travel to Eswatini (Swaziland) in Southern Africa. Costs are estimates only and may be adjusted if lower rates become available. For general information about the trips, call Teresa Davis at (704) 406-4277. Applications are available in the Office of Christian Life and Service on the main floor of Tucker Student Center. Contact the leaders for each trip for more detailed information.

    Gardner-Webb’s newest dining option, Bo’s Smokehouse, will open Sept. 8. A grand opening ceremony for the restaurant, which is located downstairs in the Dover Campus Center, is planned for 10:30 a.m.

    Coming o! an impressive seven-win season, Gardner-Webb football is eager to defend its 2022 Big South Conference title. The team opens its 2023 season on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Appalachian State in Boone. Their first home game is during Family Weekend on Saturday, Sept. 9, when the Runnin’ Bulldogs take on Elon at 6 p.m. in Spangler Stadium.

    Former National Football League player Derwin L. Gray and Gardner- Webb University alumnus Clayton King have been best friends for over two decades. These two pastors, speakers and authors will be featured in a program on Thursday, Aug. 24, sponsored by the GWU School of Divinity’s Pittman Center for Congregational Enrichment. The event, “Healing Our Racial Divide: A Conversation with Derwin L. Gray and Clayton King” will be at 7 p.m. in Hamrick Hall’s Blanton Auditorium. The public is welcome to attend, and students will receive Dimensions credit. Co-sponsors are the Offices of Christian Life and Service and Diversity and Inclusion.

    This summer, a mission team from Gardner-Webb University traveled to Kisumu, Kenya, in partnership with Houses of Hope, a ministry of Baptist on Mission. Their goal was to build and dedicate four homes for families in need. Coming out of the trip, the members of the team talked about much more than construction. They were impacted by the opportunity to carry out a valuable act of service, share their experiences and faith, and get a taste of a culture and location vastly different than that of the United States.

    Clarence “Sherman” Parrish served Gardner- Webb for over three decades in the Department of Natural Sciences. He was known for his personal investment in students’ success, professional connections, willingness to serve his community, and a calm demeanor. Parrish passed away at age 85 on Aug. 6, 2023.

    Gardner-Webb Leads Big South Conference with 339 Students on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll

    Gardner-Webb placed 339 student-athletes to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, announced on Monday, July 31.

    To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently completed academic year. GWU had the fourthhighest percentage of eligible student-athletes named to the Honor Roll, with 76.87 percent (339- of-441) student-athletes earning the accolades. The Runnin’ Bulldogs led the conference with its 339 student-athletes earning the award, as the closest school to Gardner-Webb was Campbell with 265 student-athletes being named to the list.

    The Gardner-Webb University Student Development staff is preparing to welcome 500 new students to campus on Aug. 12. These new Runnin’ Bulldogs include first-year, commuters and transfer students. From 8 a.m. to noon, residential students will check in at Tucker Student Center and move into their residence halls.

    A mission team from Gardner-Webb University discovered during their summer trip that it’s possible to make a difference in the lives of others without going abroad. Two faculty leaders and five students offered a “God’s Love in a Diaper Bag (https://www.kybaptist.org/church-missions/gods-love-from-a-diaper-bag/)” baby shower and new parent/young child education seminar for 30 low-income families in Jenkins, Ky. This rural area in southeastern Kentucky is in socioeconomic distress after the closure of its coal mines, compounded by a flood that hit in the summer of 2022.

    Head Football Coach Tre Lamb, the reigning Big South Conference Coach of the Year, has signed a contract extension, the Department of Athletics announced on Tuesday. This past season, Lamb led the Runnin’ Bulldogs to their first conference championship in 19 years and the program’s first-ever berth in FCS Playoffs.

    University President Dr. William M. Downs has named Greg Thiel the next head coach of Gardner-Webb’s track and field and cross country programs, the Department of Athletics announced on Monday. Thiel joins Gardner-Webb after most recently spending 10 seasons as the head coach at Southern Wesleyan University. Earlier in his career, Thiel spent six seasons as the head coach at the University of South Florida

    University President Dr. William M. Downs has named Tina Murphy the next head coach of Gardner-Webb’s women’s soccer program, the Department of Athletics announced on Friday. A former four-time national champion as a player at the University of North Carolina, Murphy joins Gardner-Webb after two seasons as the head coach at the University of South Carolina Aiken.

    Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Andrew T. Goodrich has named Kathleen Mirgon Crum the next head coach of Gardner-Webb’s women’s lacrosse program, the Department of Athletics announced on Wednesday. Mirgon Crum becomes the fourth head coach in program history.
