    While exploring the Broad River, students at Gardner-Webb University might observe what looks like a rock, but it’s really a bivalved freshwater mussel or mollusk, points out Dr. David Campbell, associate professor of paleontology and chair of the Department of Natural Sciences. Clams and oysters are examples of bivalved mollusks, and he has studied various species of them since he was a senior in high school (35 years). His son, Timothy, a first-year Gardner-Webb student, is carrying on the tradition, and recently father and son presented their research at the international meeting on bivalves at Cambridge University in England.

    Robert B. Tucker, a visionary entrepreneur who shared a dream that forever enhanced the Gardner-Webb University campus, passed away on Sept. 30, 2023. A devoted husband, father and businessman, Robert was known for his humble attitude and heart for helping others.

    Season tickets for Gardner-Webb basketball at Paul Porter Arena, including the reigning Big South Champion women’s basketball team, are now available for purchase exclusively to Bulldog Club members through Oct. 3. Season tickets will be made available for purchase to the general public on Friday, Oct. 6.

    Over 300 volunteers responded to the call from Gardner-Webb University’s College of Health Sciences to partner with Remote Area Medical on Sept. 23-24 to provide free medical and dental care to over 50 people. Seven patients, who had eyeglass prescriptions less than a year old, also received free glasses.

    A 21-year-old college student is taking care of her younger siblings: a 2- year-old and 13-year-old twins. Their father is in jail, and the oldest child is trying to keep the bills paid and food on the table. Although this was a role-playing scenario in a Poverty Simulation at Gardner-Webb University, many low-income families are in similar circumstances.

    Basic Camp Provides Opportunity for Eligible Rising Juniors to Join Army ROTC at Gardner-Webb

    The Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) offers qualified rising juniors (for Fall 2024) an opportunity to enroll in the program at Gardner-Webb University. By attending one of the 30-day Basic Camps next summer at Fort Knox, Ky., students will become eligible to enroll in the final two-year Advanced Army ROTC program.

    Like any student-athlete at Gardner-Webb University, Brady Fields’ goal was to develop his muscles and improve his performance on the swim team. The 2022 alumnus and now a graduate student in the Master of Science in Strength and Conditioning program competed on the swim team for five years. His competitive spirit inspired him to research a trend in resistance training for swimmers.

    Gardner-Webb’s newest dining option, Bo’s Smokehouse, opened on Sept. 8—just in time for Family Weekend. The restaurant, located downstairs in the Dover Campus Center, features award-winning North Carolina Barbecue with a choice of regional sauces, quesadillas, wings, sandwiches and salads.

    The Gardner-Webb University family is remembering one of its unique faculty members. Jim Johnson, assistant professor of mathematics passed away on Sept. 6, 2023, at the age of 76. He was unique, noted his friend and colleague, Bob Bass, because he began his career at Gardner-Webb as head basketball coach (https://gwusports.com/news/2023/9/7/mens-basketball-remembering-jim-johnson.aspx) in 1990.

    Award-winning author Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle will be the guest speaker for the Darlene J. Gravett Visiting Writer Series on Oct. 2 at Gardner-Webb University. Hosted by the Department of English Language and Literature, Clapsaddle will spend time during the day sharing with creative writing and first-year composition students. The public is invited to hear Clapsaddle speak at 7 p.m. in Hamrick Hall’s Blanton Auditorium. She will discuss her debut novel, “Even As We Breathe.”

    After studying German at Gardner-Webb University with professor Dr. Bernhard Martin, Santiago Agreda-Martinez and Jordan Joseph applied to study abroad in Mannheim, Germany. They began their adventure on July 31. Joseph will stay for two semesters, and Agreda-Martinez will be back at GWU for the 2024 Spring Semester.

    While searching for a summer internship, Victoria Fischetti, a May 2023 graduate of Gardner-Webb University, hadn’t thought about using Tik Tok. On the team bus back to campus after a lacrosse game, she was passing the time by scrolling through the social media app. “A video came up listing all the different websites where you could find a job in sports,” Fischetti described. “So, I started looking through the websites and on TeamWorkOnline.com, I saw the posting and filled out my application right away.”

    Dr. Carrie Mae Long, a 2011 Gardner-Webb University alumna with a degree in biology, is the winner of the Pathogens 2022 Young Investigator Award (https://www.mdpi.com/about/announcements/6053). Pathogens, an international, peerreviewed, open access journal, presents this honor annually to recognize excellence in the field.

    Gardner-Webb will celebrate Founders Day on Nov. 30 in recognition of the date the University was officially chartered, which was on Dec. 2, 1905. A highlight of the observance is the presentation of the Founders Medal, which recognizes individuals who have contributed significant and distinguished service to the Gardner-Webb.

    For the 2023 Fall Semester, Gardner-Webb University administrators, faculty and staff welcomed 525 new traditional undergraduate students to campus—an increase over last year’s incoming cohort. This number incorporates first-time freshmen as well as transfer students from all corners of North Carolina, from across the country (26 states) and indeed from around the globe (12 countries).

    Families are invited to experience their student’s home at Gardner-Webb University for Family Weekend on Sept. 8-10. Activities begin on Friday at 8 p.m. with Sweet Bingo, include the first home football game on Saturday—GWU vs. Elon—and end with a worship service on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m.
