Gardner-Webb’s November Webb Connections Honors Military and Their Families

As the nation honors its veterans during November, Gardner-Webb University’s Webb Connections program this month will focus on the contributions and sacrifices of military members and their families. Hosted by GWU President Dr. William Downs, “Gardner-Webb and The Military Experience,” will be held Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in Stewart Hall of Tucker Student Center. The program is open to the public.

GWU Officials Announce Naming of Searight PACE Program, Leadership Certificate and Award

Raised on a farm in Alabama, an imaginative child made a basketball from scraps, taught himself how to play and earned a scholarship to college. Now, that child, the Rev. Johnny L. Searight, and his wife, Shirley P. Searight, alumni of Gardner-Webb University, want to create educational opportunities for students in similar situations. With the help of the GWU Advancement team, they have established the Searight Leadership Certificate (SLC) and the Searight Multicultural Leadership Award (SMLA).

Gardner-Webb Campus Honors Military During Veteran’s Day Prayer Service

The Gardner-Webb University campus and community celebrated Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, with a prayer service at 11 a.m. in Dover Chapel. In his opening remarks, President Dr. William Downs noted the significance of the date: “At the 11th hour, on the 11th day, in the 11th month in the year 1918, fighting ended in what we now know as World War I. The United States and its allies emerged victorious in the so-called great war, a war that was supposed to end all wars. And then a year later, American president Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as Armistice day, a day that would— in his words—be an opportunity for Americans to show their solemn pride in the heroism of those who died… and with gratitude for the victory.”

GWU Doctoral Student Recognized for his Commitment to Advancing Social Justice

A doctoral student in the College of Education at Gardner-Webb University has been honored by his undergraduate alma mater. L. Jameco McKenzie is a 2021 Distinguished Young Alumni for Methodist University (MU) in Fayetteville, N.C. A 2015 graduate of MU, McKenzie serves as a residential life coordinator for North Carolina State University (NCSU) in Raleigh and is pursuing a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership (DEOL) from GWU. He was recognized for his commitment to advancing social justice within and beyond higher education and student affairs.

Last Show for GWU Fall Theatre Season, ‘The Last Five Years,’ Presented in Millennium Playhouse

Gardner-Webb University’s Department of Theatre Arts presents the final show of the 2021 Fall Season—”The Last Five Years”—a musical written by Jason Robert Brown and first performed in Chicago in 2001. In the words of the show’s director, Dr. Chris Nelson, assistant professor of theatre arts, this year is the “small musical year.” As such, it will be performed in the smaller Millennium Playhouse, located at 141 S. Main St., Boiling Springs.

No-Shave November Brings Awareness to Men’s Mental and Physical Health

Officials at Gardner-Webb and Gaston (N.C.) Christian School (GCS) Announce Dual Enrollment

Following their ongoing commitment to provide an affordable, world-class Christian education, officials at Gardner-Webb University have signed a Concurrent (Dual) Enrollment Agreement with Gaston (N.C.) Christian School (GSC). For the 2021-2022 school year, GWU and GSC are offering classes that can be taken concurrently for GCS high school credit and GWU college credit.

Undergraduate Researcher Gains Hands-on Lab Experience for Medical School

Research by a Gardner-Webb University student explored more efficient ways to turn kitchen waste into useful and possibly life-giving materials. Jordan Mitchell, ’23, tested various citrus fruits to determine which peelings produce the most limonene, a chemical that works as an eco-friendly disinfectant and pesticide—and has shown promise in the fight against cancer.

South Carolina Residents Can Now Show their Gardner-Webb Pride on a License Plate

The wait is over for Gardner-Webb University alumni who live in South Carolina and want to display their school pride on a license plate. South Carolina specialty license plates are now available through the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The new Gardner-Webb S.C. plates allow supporters of Gardner-Webb to show school pride while providing financial support to GWU.

Gardner-Webb Athletics Honors Coach and Football Standouts at Homecoming Game

As part of Homecoming festivities on Oct. 23, Gardner-Webb University Athletics is honoring the achievements of three football players and a legendary coach. The individuals—Richard Grissom, Chip Stuart and Darrell Middleton—are the only three players who have had their jerseys retired in the 86-year history of football at Gardner-Webb. Coach Norman Harris not only led the football program for 17 years, but also coached basketball and baseball.

In the 116-year history of Gardner-Webb University, numerous faculty pioneers have engineered components of campus life and curriculum. One of those influential professors, Dr. Robert L. “Bob” Lamb, dean emeritus of the M. Christopher White School of Divinity, passed away on Oct. 19, 2021.

A Gardner-Webb University student pursuing her Master of Divinity in Christian Education is the recipient of the first Vernie W. Lewis Scholarship from the Charles B. Keesee Educational Fund Inc. Avery L. Woods, also a 2020 alumna of GWU with a bachelor’s degree in discipleship studies, is the youth coordinator at Hope Community Church (HCC) in Shelby, N.C.

The Gardner-Webb University Center for Personal and Professional Development will host over 70 companies at the fall Career and Internship Fair on Oct. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Held in Tucker Student Center, the event will be open to all students to further their job opportunities and enhance their knowledge on job searching. Students can learn about potential jobs and explore the different paths they can follow after graduating.

Susan Bell, Gardner-Webb Professor Emerita of Art, Presents Gallery Show

Susan Bell, who retired from Gardner-Webb University and was named professor emerita of art in 2021, will present a gallery show Oct. 23-Dec. 10 in the Ali Pouryousefi Memorial Art Gallery in Tucker Student Center. The exhibit, “A Retrospective: Roots and Wings and Ordinary Things” begins Homecoming weekend. The opening reception for the show will be Oct. 24 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Gardner-Webb Excellence in Teaching Award Chosen by Deans, Faculty, Students and Staff

A Gardner-Webb University assistant professor known for her inventive teaching, encouraging manner, and clear expectations has been honored with the 2021 Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Abby Garlock in the Hunt School of Nursing was presented the award recently along with a $1,000 cash prize. Established at GWU years ago to recognize, foster, and stimulate teaching excellence, this award identifies faculty members who are making a lasting impact on their students through their dedication, creativity, innovation, service, and their ability to transform lives.

180-Mile Cycle to the Sea Fundraiser Postponed Because of COVID-19 Concerns

Jacob Conley, a 2008 graduate of Gardner-Webb University, will have to wait to participate in his 12th Cycle to the Sea. Originally scheduled for Oct. 21-23, the fundraiser has been postponed because of COVID-19 concerns. Organizers will look to reschedule either in April or October 2022. Conley said all donations will be forwarded to the new date.

Gardner-Webb Library Hosts Discussion Inspired by PBS Series on the Black Church

GWU Department of Music Presents Concerts by Concert Choir and Chorales

The Gardner-Webb Department of Music is hosting two concerts this week. The Concert Choir presents a program on Tuesday, Oct. 12, and the Men’s Chorale and Treble Chorale will perform on Thursday, Oct. 14. Both programs are free and open to the public and each one will begin at 8 p.m. in Dover Chapel.
