Joe Waller Receives Full-Tuition Scholarship From the GWU School of Divinity

A!er graduating in May 2023 with a psychology degree from Gardner- Webb University, Joe Waller enrolled in the School of Divinity. He is pursuing a dual degree—the Master of Mental Health Counseling and Master of Divinity. Waller, who minored in biblical studies, is the 2023 recipient of the Dean’s Fellow Scholarship Award, given annually by the GWU School of Divinity.

Gardner-Webb Department of Music Presents Instrumental Concerts in November

The Gardner-Webb University Department of Music presents three instrumental concerts over the next two weeks. The Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Orchestra—which feature students, faculty and some community members—will perform various selections from Christmas tunes and classical works to film scores and jazz standards.

Gardner-Webb Participates in Duke Energy Program to Install Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station in University Commons

In the next two years, CNBC (https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/19/evcharging- industry-improvements.html) reports that automakers expect to spend billions of dollars to bring more Electric Vehicles (EV) to market. In response to the increased production and the state of North Carolina’s goals for a cleaner environment, Duke Energy introduced the Park & Plug program. Through this Duke initiative, Gardner-Webb University has opened an Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station at University Commons with three separate dispensers. Additionally, another EV charging station with two dispensers will open soon near the Brinkley Amphitheater

Gardner-Webb Breaks Ground on New Soccer Field House

Gardner-Webb University recently broke ground on a new Soccer Field House that will provide locker rooms, team meeting space, coaches’ offices and an athletic training space for the men’s and women’s soccer programs. This new facility was funded by generous donations from GWU supporters.

Ricky Skaggs Opens Gardner-Webb’s Brinkley Amphitheater to a Sold-Out Crowd

A spectacular autumn sunset provided the perfect backdrop as Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder officially opened the Brinkley Amphitheater at Gardner-Webb University on Saturday, Oct. 28. An enthusiastic sold-out crowd welcomed the 15-time Grammy winner along with Gardner-Webb student Lindy Bryson and country artist Will Jones.

Gardner-Webb Announces 2023 Hall of Fame Class and Special Recognitions

Gardner-Webb University has announced the 2023 Athletics Hall of Fame class.
Jesse James (1985-87) will be the newest induction into the Hall of Fame, while Joan Cline Backhaus (1957-59) will be posthumously recognized for her induction at last year’s Hall of Fame ceremony. Long time Sports Information Director Marc Rabb will also be recognized.

Gardner-Webb Celebrates First-Generation College Students on Nov. 7

Gardner-Webb University is highlighting and celebrating first-generation college students on Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of Tucker Student Center. A first generation student is any student whose parents did not complete a four-year college or university degree, regardless of other family members’ level of education. According to the Center for First- Generation Student Success (https://firstgen.naspa.org/), over half of college students in the United States are considered first-generation.

Gardner-Webb Team Serves Children with Critical Illnesses and Their Families

A team of 14 from Gardner-Webb University spent their fall break scooping ice cream, serving food, and giving hugs and high fives at Give Kids the World Village (GKTW) in Orlando, Fla. This 84-acre, non-profit resort serves children with a critical illness and their families. Everything is free—accommodations in fully-furnished villas, transportation, tickets to theme parks, meals, daily entertainment, and much more.

Gardner-Webb’s Physician Assistant Class of 2023 Achieves 94% Pass Rate on National Certifying Exam

Faculty and staff of the Gardner-Webb Department of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies are celebrating graduates’ recent scores on the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE). The PA Class of 2023 achieved a 94% pass rate on the multiple-choice exam that assesses professionalism, and basic medical and surgical knowledge.

Gardner-Webb Homecoming 2023 Welcomes Alumni and Celebrates Students

Homecoming 2023 at Gardner-Webb University features three days of festivities Oct. 27-29 to welcome alumni and celebrate the GWU student-experience. The events will also usher in a new era with the first concert in the Gardner-Webb Brinkley Amphitheater on Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. Headlined by Grammy award-winner Ricky Skaggs and his band Kentucky Thunder, the performance will launch a venue that will host a variety of arts and entertainment for years to come.

Gardner-Webb’s basketball teams will o!icially tipoff the new season on Tuesday, Oct. 24, as the ‘Dawgs host Bulldog Madness at 7 p.m. inside Paul Porter Arena. Doors open at 6 p.m., and admission is free to the general public.

Gardner-Webb Students Examine Reptiles and Amphibians on Campus and at Broad River

Gardner-Webb University students in the animal physiology class with Assistant Professor of Biology Jay Zimmer recently conducted two outdoor labs to collect and record data about local reptiles and amphibians. For their survey, they explored the creek behind the Gardner-Webb football practice field as well as the Broad River Greenway the following week.

GWU Alumnus, Two-Time Big South Champion, Creates Endowment

From 2001 to 2005, C.J. Brown was an offensive lineman on back-to-back Big South Championship Football teams (2002 and 2003). The life-changing experience provided the skills he needed to build his career, and he wants to ensure that future student-athletes have the same chance to succeed.

An annual fall tradition on the Gardner-Webb campus since 2005, Octoberfest will be held on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC). Joining the GWU campus as hosts for the second year are Ruby C. Hunt YMCA and the Town of Boiling Springs. All activities are free and open to the public.

Local Car Club Participates in Gardner-Webb Homecoming Parade for Seventh Year

Members of the Broad River European Motor Club have two passions: sports cars and community service. Since 2016, club members have graciously provided several sports cars each year for the Homecoming parade at Gardner-Webb University. The vintage cars carry class representatives from the Homecoming Court.

Washington Monthly Lists Gardner-Webb as a Top Five Private College in North Carolina for Second Year

Cleveland County Study Reports Gardner-Webb’s Total Economic Impact: $155.3 Million

A new study by Tourism Economics, which was commissioned by Visit Cleveland County, N.C., has documented and determined the economic impacts of four organizations, including Gardner-Webb University. The comprehensive report analyzed data from 2022 and concluded that GWU generated a total economic impact of $155.3 million in the local economy, was responsible for 1,315 full- and part-time jobs, and produced $8.0 million in tax revenues at the state and local levels.
