High-Achieving High School Students Invited to Gardner-Webb Honors Experience on July 16-21

The Honors Experience at Gardner-Webb University, offered July 16-21, introduces academically gifted and talented students in grades nine through 11 to life on the GWU campus. The students stay in dorms, eat in the Caf and attend classes and chapel programs. Students who are accepted into the program are automatically qualified to compete for Gardner-Webb’s Ignite Excellence Scholarship.

Gardner-Webb Doctoral and Accelerated Bachelor’s Nursing Programs Surge in Enrollment

Gardner-Webb University is home to one of North Carolina’s most comprehensive nursing programs that includes associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Students who desire to enter the field of nursing or those who want to further their careers are choosing the GWU Hunt School of Nursing. Enrollment in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) has grown from 14 to 73 in recent years, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) has increased from 47 in 2019 to 96 in 2023.

Women’s History Month Honors Mentors and History-Makers

The celebration of Women’s History Month is not only a time to reflect on famous women of the past, but also provides an opportunity to honor those who quietly make a difference in their own communities. One of Gardner-Webb University’s history-makers was Fredia Lawrence-King, a trailblazer in women’s sports. While reflecting on her accomplishments, Fredia said the two women who impacted her life with their integrity, character and Christian beliefs are Lola Lawrence and Karen Smith.

Gardner-Webb Assistant Professor Dr. Erin Cook Receives President’s Early Career Award

Dr. Erin Cook, assistant professor and program coordinator for human services, was selected for the honor based on her productivity in scholarship, creative discovery, and instruction that exceeds expectations.

Gardner-Webb Senior, First in her Family to Attend College, Pursues Exercise Science Degree

In 2017, before Makenzie Beasley Wright even considered attending Gardner-Webb University, she was in a head-on automobile collision with a cement truck. Through no fault of her own, the crash caused multiple fractures in her femur, pelvis and knee cap, a broken wrist and a collapsed lung. She spent nearly three months in the hospital learning how to walk again. During the times of discouragement, Wright’s physical therapy assistant (PTA) refused to let her quit.

Gardner-Webb Team Attends North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Ethics Bowl

Artificial intelligence, mental health, and non-fungible tokens (NFT’s), a type of cryptocurrency in the art world, are a few of the topics that were debated under the umbrella of Ethics in Contemporary Society as part of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities’ (NCICU) 12th annual Ethics Bowl. Students from Gardner-Webb University joined others from 15 private college and university campuses across North Carolina for the event held recently at the North Carolina Legislative Complex in Raleigh.

Gardner-Webb Wrestlers Wrap up Competition at NCAA Championships

Gardner-Webb wrestlers RJ Mosley and Jha’Quan Anderson each capped their seasons at the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on March 16.
Both men saw their run come to an end after a hard fought day at the BOK Center, with more than 30,000 fans attending both sessions.
Anderson was the first to wrestle, falling 5-3 to West Virginia’s Anthony Carman in overtime in the 184-pound opener.

Seven to Compete in Miss Gardner-Webb Pageant on March 26

Seven young women will compete on March 26 for the title of Miss Gardner-Webb. The annual event will be held at 3 p.m. in Dover Theatre. The pageant is held during Women’s History Month to honor women who inspire and lead by their examples.

A fierce, commanding Runnin’ Bulldog sculpture, unveiled on March 13, celebrates the competitive spirit of Gardner-Webb’s student-athletes and captures the dedication and pride of students, alumni and friends. Placed at the lower main entrance to the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center, the bulldog sculpture is made possible by the generous support of David and Marie Brinkley and other friends of GWU.

Gardner-Webb Online’s Popular 10-Month Master of Public Administration Offers Open Enrollment in April

The affordability and flexibility of Gardner-Webb Online’s 10-month Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree attracted many students like Michael Taylor, of Kingston, Tenn., to enroll in the first term. The successful program launched in January with two cohorts to meet the demand, and enrollment continues to exceed expectations.

Gardner-Webb Women Headed to the Big Dance

The Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team will play at No. 2 seed Utah on Friday, March 17, in the first round of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championships.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs (29-4) are the No. 15 seed in the region and will take on the Utes (25-4) from the PAC-12 Conference. It will be the two schools’ first meeting.

Being the first in his family to graduate from college, Ulises Martinez, of Hendersonville, N.C., represents more than six decades of hard work and hope. His grandfather came to America from Mexico in the 1960s in search of seasonal work to support his family. Then, his father and uncle arrived in the 1980s with a dream to establish a permanent home in the United States that eventually became a reality.

Gardner-Webb to Host Wrestling Selection Show Watch Party Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Gardner-Webb University will host a 2023 NCAA Wrestling Selection Show watch party on Wednesday night (March 8) in Tucker Student Center as the brackets are revealed for Jha’Quan Anderson and RJ Mosley.
The event begins at 7 p.m. in Stewart Hall and is open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. All Gardner-Webb students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend as both student-athlete’s names are revealed as part of collegiate wrestling’s premier event.

Gardner-Webb ROTC Cadet Chosen for Honor During Program at Big South Championship

A cadet from the Gardner-Webb University Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) will be recognized during the Hercules Tire Big South Championships on March 2 at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C. Cadet Zach Morrow, a freshman, will be honored as part of the second annual US Army ROTC Big South High School Education Day. High school students are invited to attend this event, which includes admission to the women’s quarterfinals and an opportunity to learn more about the ROTC and Big South colleges and universities.

GWU School of Nursing Partners with CaroMont Health to Help Students Finish Education

A partnership between CaroMont Health and Gardner-Webb University’s Hunt School of Nursing addresses the nursing shortage while helping students complete requirements for licensure. Through this initiative, CaroMont Health offers senior nursing students $7,500 in tuition assistance and the opportunity to complete their required practicum hours at the hospital. In return, the students agree to work as an RN for CaroMont Health for two years after graduation. This semester, eight GWU students are receiving assistance.

Gardner-Webb Department of Theatre Arts Presents Susan Glaspell Plays

The performers who will take the stage in Gardner-Webb University’s production of two plays by Susan Glaspell: “Trifles” and “Suppressed Desires” are some of the busiest students on campus. Their love for the theater drives them to add memorizing lines and four weeks of rehearsals to their already full schedules.
