Gardner-Webb Creation Care Group Sponsors Events to Celebrate Earth Day

Gardner-Webb University celebrates Creation Care/Earth Week, April 19-22, with a series of programs to highlight recycling and sustainability practices to preserve the integrity, beauty and health of God’s creation. Guest speakers include GWU faculty and top environmentalists from the region and the nation. The activities are sponsored by the Creation Care Advisory Group and are open to the public.

Allie Cooke Crowned Miss Gardner-Webb

Allie Cooke, of Hickory, N.C., was crowned Miss Gardner-Webb at the pageant held on March 27. Cooke, a first-year student, is double majoring in exercise science/biology and youth discipleship. Her platform is to raise awareness of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Dr. W. Randall Lolley, Former Gardner-Webb Trustee, Dies at 90

Dr. W. Randall Lolley, former trustee of Gardner-Webb University from 1998 to 2001, passed away on March 21, 2022, in Raleigh, N.C., surrounded by his family. In addition to being a member of the Board of Trustees, Lolley was honored at GWU in 2000 with the establishment of the W. Randall Lolley Chair for Pastoral Studies.

Gardner-Webb Announces Barnes & Noble will Manage University Campus Shop

Gardner-Webb officials have announced a partnership with Barnes & Noble College (BNC) to manage the University’s Campus Shop. The company operates over 1,400 physical and digital stores for schools, colleges and universities across the United States.

Double Dawg Day Breaks Fundraising Records at Gardner-Webb

The seventh annual Double Dawg Day on April 7 was a record-breaking success by raising $766,131 (exceeding last year’s total by $450,534). Each of the 1,329 gifts has a direct and lasting impact on the success of Gardner-Webb University and its students.

Gardner-Webb’s Dr. Francis Kim Discusses U.S. Monetary Policy on Top National Television Network in South Korea

Dr. Francis Kim, associate professor of finance in the Godbold College of Business at Gardner-Webb University, was recently featured on SBS, one of the top three national television and radio networks in South Korea. Kim discussed financial-related topics of international interest and appears for about 15 minutes.

GWU President Announces Grant-Seeking Reassignment Award to Ellen Campos Sousa

Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William M. Downs has presented the 2022-23 Grant-Seeking Reassignment Award to Dr. Ellen Campos Sousa, assistant professor of marketing. For the third consecutive year, this award seeks to provide recipients the time to prepare and submit a proposal for external funding in support of scholarly activities and program enhancements. “I am very thankful to Dr. Downs for this award,” said Campos Sousa. “Opportunities such as this are very important to help us in creating good practices to positively affect society.”

Gardner-Webb Sigma Zeta National Science and Mathematics Honor Society Inducts New Members

Nineteen students were inducted into the Sigma Zeta National Science and Mathematics Honor Society on April 7. New members received membership certificates, and graduating seniors were given a medallion to wear at graduation.

President’s 2022 Early Career Award Recognizes Social Sciences Professor

Stanly Community College Partners with Gardner-Webb to Offer Co-Admission Agreements

Officials from Gardner-Webb University and Stanly Community College (SCC) in Albemarle, N.C., signed agreements on April 4 that expand transfer pathways for the schools. The “Bulldog Bound” direct-entry admission program will provide a seamless process for SCC students transferring to Gardner-Webb. Additionally, separate Pathway Agreements for Accounting & Finance, Business Administration, Criminal Justice and Early Childhood Education will create direct admission into the GWU’s Online-Degree Completion Program for bachelor’s degrees in these disciplines.

Each Member of Gardner-Webb’s Delegation to National Alpha Chi Convention is a Winner

At the Alpha Chi National Convention and centennial celebration, delegates from Gardner-Webb University made their own history. Held recently in Austin, Texas, all five students from GWU were recognized with an award and a monetary prize. Moreover, two students from GWU—Caleb Etchison and Allyson Butts—won the top two national awards. The other three winners, Grace Burgin, Kimberly Cole and Michelle Lominac, won second place in the Collaborative Research Competition.

GWU’s Noel Center for Disability Resources Promotes World Autism Awareness Day and Acceptance Month

World Autism Awareness Day is on April 2, and the observance on Gardner-Webb University’s campus will be supported by multiple groups, including the staff of the Noel Center for Disability Resources and the students they serve. Over the last two decades, the number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has increased significantly. Based on the most recent data, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that approximately 1 in 44 children have been identified as having ASD, which compares to 1 in 150 in 2000.

Gardner-Webb Officials Present Ignite Excellence Scholarships to Exemplary Students

The Admissions staff at Gardner-Webb University has announced the 2022 winners of the Ignite Excellence Scholarships. Each of the eight recipients will receive a full-tuition scholarship that covers the cost of tuition for fall and spring semesters and is valued at $31,220 per academic year.

Gardner-Webb President Downs Appoints New Faculty Athletic Representative

Gardner-Webb President William Downs recently announced the appointment of Dr. Sharon Webb as the new Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR). A professor in the School of Psychological Science and Counselor Education, Webb succeeds Dr. Chris Davis, who has served since 2009. This position, mandated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), is appointed by and reports directly to the president.

Gardner-Webb Theatre Presents Men on Boats

Ten explorers. Four boats. One Grand Canyon. Men on Boats features an all-female cast portraying the true(ish) history of an 1869 expedition. Presented by the Gardner-Webb University Department of Theatre Arts, the play is directed by Dr. Chris Nelson. The story follows a crew of volunteers, led by a one-armed captain, as they set out on the Colorado River.

Gardner-Webb University Holds the Line on Tuition Costs for Fourth Year

For the fourth year in a row, Gardner-Webb University has announced a freeze on tuition for traditional undergraduate students enrolled in the Boiling Springs campus program. The freeze will apply to incoming freshmen, transfer students and current undergraduates for fall 2022.

Alumnus’ Book Started with Writing Assignment After His Twin’s Suicide

Court Greene, of Canton, N.C., and his fraternal twin, Zachary, shared the same birthday and a special bond, but they were different in every other way. Court is a pastor and alumnus of Gardner-Webb University; while Zach faced many unforeseen hardships, taking his life down a much darker path. When Zach took his own life in 2019 at the age of 38, Court was thrown into turmoil and began a journey to find his way through the hurt and anguish.

Renovations to John R. Dover Library Meet Needs of Gardner-Webb Students

Since December 2021, the Facilities and Maintenance staff has worked to significantly transform the third floor of Gardner-Webb University’s John R. Dover Library. The floor recently opened to the delight and surprise of students. “They do love the space,” observed Dean of the Library Pam Dennis. “The looks on their faces when they get to the top of the steps is priceless!”

Application Deadline Extended to March 31 for Immersive Academic and Professional Opportunity in Nation’s Capital

Officials at Gardner-Webb University recently announced a new immersive academic and professional opportunity: The Webb in Washington. This semester-long program in Washington, D.C., is open to students in all Colleges and Schools at Gardner-Webb and will launch in Fall 2022 with an inaugural four-student cohort. Applications are due by Thursday, March 31, at 5 p.m.
