Gardner-Webb Exercise Science Students Present Research at Undergraduate Conference

A dozen students from Gardner-Webb University’s Department of Exercise Science recently attended the Integrating Research in Science (IRIS) conference at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Gardner-Webb delegation was one of 21 groups that participated in the poster presentation section of the event.

Gardner-Webb Receives $150K from The Cannon Foundation

Gardner-Webb recently received a $150,000 grant that will transform healthcare, science and fine art education at the University. Presented by The Cannon Foundation, this funding will benefit students in the College of Health Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and enriching educational experiences.

Gardner-Webb English Department and Broad River Review Host Foothills Writers Day

High school students from five nearby counties recently participated in Foothills Writers Day on the Gardner-Webb University campus. Sponsored by the Department of English Language and Literature and the Broad River Review, the literary magazine of GWU, the event featured four GWU alumni, who shared about their work as young writers. The winners of the Foothills Writing Contest were also announced. The contest was open to ninth- through 12- graders in Cleveland, Gaston, Rutherford, Lincoln or Polk counties in North Carolina.

Gardner-Webb University has hired Je!rey Merrill as its new assistant athletic director for compliance, announced Vice President & Director of Athletics Dr. Andrew T. Goodrich this week. Merrill joins Gardner-Webb a"er 10 years at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C., where he most recently served as deputy director of Athletics and chief compliance o!icer.

Biology Major Interned with Gardner-Webb Alumnus at Practice Where she was a Patient

Through an internship with OrthoCarolina in Shelby, N.C., Gardner-Webb University senior Kyla Pascucci, ’25, gained a unique opportunity to use her knowledge and skills within the medical field. Pascucci is a biology major with a concentration in biomedical science.

Gardner-Webb Hires Linda M. Fleischman as New Registrar

Gardner-Webb Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Karen Aubrey has announced the hiring of a new University Registrar. Linda M. Fleischman, who has more than 30 years of registrar experience, will begin her responsibilities at GWU on May 13.

Gardner-Webb Launches New Summer in the Springs Concert Series at Brinkley Amphitheater

A brass “dream team” and a Dove award-winning musician will perform in Gardner-Webb University’s inaugural “Summer in the Springs” Concert Series at Brinkley Amphitheater. The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass will entertain on June 8. Carl Cartee with special guests Shaylee Simeone and April Cushman will be in concert on July 20. Cartee’s event will raise funds for GWU mission and service trips for students. A third concert planned for Aug. 24 will welcome GWU students back to campus; details will be announced soon.

2024 Spring Commencement Ceremony Especially Meaningful for Dr. Sophia Steibel

As the procession of Gardner-Webb students and faculty march into Spangler Stadium on Thursday, May 2, the moment will be savored by everyone.
For one professor, Dr. Sophia Steibel, the 2024 Commencement Ceremony will mark three significant milestones. Steibel is retiring after serving the University for 30 years, and she’s been named Professor Emerita in the M. Christopher White School of Divinity. Most importantly, the Brazilian native will reflect on the impactful day 50 years ago when she arrived on Gardner-Webb’s campus for the first time.

Gardner-Webb Awards Degrees in Spring Commencement Ceremony on May 2

The event honored students in the traditional undergraduate, online, and graduate programs of study. The featured speaker was Gardner-Webb alumna and Superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools, Dr. Crystal L. Hill.

Two-Time Reigning Football Champs Announce Full 2024 Schedule

The two-time reigning conference champion Gardner-Webb football team has announced its complete schedule for the upcoming 2024 season. The four-game non-conference slate and eight-game conference lineup opens on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. vs. Wofford College at Spangler Stadium.

Administration and faculty in the Gardner-Webb Hunt School of Nursing are pleased to introduce a significant initiative — the GWU Foothills Nursing Promise. This plan o!ers a 50% tuition reduction for graduates of Cleveland Community College, Isothermal Community College, and Gaston Community College, as well as for residents of those counties interested in attending the online Davis RN-BSN Program. The same discount has also been secured for Gardner-Webb ASN graduates.

Gardner-Webb Division of Student Success Opens Lounge to Support Commuter Students

Gardner-Webb commuter students now have a new dedicated space on campus to relax between classes, study, have access to lockers, or warm up a packed lunch. The Commuter Commons opened Thursday, April 18, on the Third Floor of Tucker Student Center next to the Student Success Main Suite. Refreshments were available and Dr. Josh Parrott, Vice President of Christian Life and Service, prayed over the space and offered a blessing for the students who will use the Commons, as well as for the staff involved across campus who support commuters.

Thirty students in the Gardner-Webb Department of Communication, Art and Design will showcase over 60 pieces of their work in the 2024 Student Showcase. The display will hang in the Communication Studies Hall, 141 S. Main St., through May 2. The opening reception is April 17 from 4 to 6 p.m.

The Beta Tau Chapter of Sigma Zeta National Honor Society held its induction ceremony in March. Nineteen students were recognized as new members, and the new officers were installed. Graduating seniors were also recognized.

Gardner-Webb Supporters Surpass Double Dawg Day Records with $1.4 Million Raised

Faithful supporters answered the call in a big way on Gardner-Webb University’s ninth annual Double Dawg Day, April 11, setting new and impressive records for The one-day fundraising total reached its highest dollar amount ever — $1.4 million. New heights were also reached when GWU recorded the greatest number of gifts received in a single day and when the donor map for the first time included contributors residing in every U.S. state.

Alex Hinsey Named Gardner-Webb’s Head Women’s Volleyball Coach

Gardner-Webb President Dr. William M. Downs has named Alex Hinsey the next head coach of the GWU women’s volleyball program, the Department of Athletics announced on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. Hinsey joins GWU after four seasons as the head coach at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) in Fredericksburg, Va.
