    Gardner-Webb celebrated the achievements of over 500 students at the University’s Spring Commencement Ceremony on May 2 in Spangler Stadium. The event honored students in the traditional undergraduate, online, and graduate programs of study. The featured speaker was Gardner-Webb alumna and Superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools, Dr. Crystal L. Hill.

    The two-time reigning conference champion Gardner-Webb football team has announced its complete schedule for the upcoming 2024 season. The four-game non-conference slate and eight-game conference lineup opens on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. vs. Wofford College at Spangler Stadium.

    Administration and faculty in the Gardner-Webb Hunt School of Nursing are pleased to introduce a significant initiative — the GWU Foothills Nursing Promise. This plan o!ers a 50% tuition reduction for graduates of Cleveland Community College, Isothermal Community College, and Gaston Community College, as well as for residents of those counties interested in attending the online Davis RN-BSN Program. The same discount has also been secured for Gardner-Webb ASN graduates.

    The Gardner-Webb University Department of Communication, Art and Design presents its Senior Portfolio Show through May 2 in Ali Pouryousefi Gallery, Tucker Student Center. The group of 23 seniors will be honored at a reception on April 25 from 4-6 p.m. in the gallery.

    A group of Gardner-Webb students have started a new needlework club named Threaded Together. Officially recognized by the Student Government Association, the club has an interest meeting today, April 23, from 4-7 p.m. in Room 103, Dover Library.

    Gardner-Webb commuter students now have a new dedicated space on campus to relax between classes, study, have access to lockers, or warm up a packed lunch. The Commuter Commons opened Thursday, April 18, on the Third Floor of Tucker Student Center next to the Student Success Main Suite. Refreshments were available and Dr. Josh Parrott, Vice President of Christian Life and Service, prayed over the space and offered a blessing for the students who will use the Commons, as well as for the staff involved across campus who support commuters.

    Gardner-Webb University will host its Spring Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in Spangler Stadium. Families and guests will celebrate the achievements of more than 500 students in traditional undergraduate, online, and graduate programs of study.

    The 60-member Gardner-Webb University Orchestra, under the direction of Professor Dr. Patricia Sparti, will present its spring concert on Monday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in Dover Theatre. The program, which should run just over an hour, has something for everyone.

    Thirty students in the Gardner-Webb Department of Communication, Art and Design will showcase over 60 pieces of their work in the 2024 Student Showcase. The display will hang in the Communication Studies Hall, 141 S. Main St., through May 2. The opening reception is April 17 from 4 to 6 p.m.

    The Beta Tau Chapter of Sigma Zeta National Honor Society held its induction ceremony in March. Nineteen students were recognized as new members, and the new officers were installed. Graduating seniors were also recognized.

    Faithful supporters answered the call in a big way on Gardner-Webb University’s ninth annual Double Dawg Day, April 11, setting new and impressive records for The one-day fundraising total reached its highest dollar amount ever — $1.4 million. New heights were also reached when GWU recorded the greatest number of gifts received in a single day and when the donor map for the first time included contributors residing in every U.S. state.

    Gardner-Webb President Dr. William M. Downs has named Alex Hinsey the next head coach of the GWU women’s volleyball program, the Department of Athletics announced on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. Hinsey joins GWU after four seasons as the head coach at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) in Fredericksburg, Va.

    Webbstock ’24 has all the ingredients for a day of family fun. Gardner-Webb and the Town of Boiling Springs are making plans to showcase talented regional musicians along with a tasty variety of food and unique items for sale by artists and crafters. Main Street will come alive on Saturday, April 20, with free performances in the Brinkley Amphitheater and the Main Street stage. The festival opens at 11 a.m., and the first band performs at 1 p.m.

    Gardner-Webb Physician Assistant Students Selected for Highly Competitive Clinical Rotation

    Two students in the Gardner-Webb University Department of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies have been selected to participate in a fall elective clinical rotation at MD Anderson Cancer Center-Texas Medical Center, Houston. Through a highly-competitive process, Taylor Jernigan and Orian Bar, from the GWU Class of 2025, are among only 25 students from across the United States invited to train at this facility. Additionally, the Gardner-Webb students were offered a five-week clinical rotation instead of the usual three to four weeks.

    Gardner-Webb University students and sta! served people in the United States and Guatemala by participating in mission trips over spring break. Two teams were sponsored by the O!ice of Christian Life and Service and included 14 people. The other trip was sponsored by a local church with 12 GWU students participating.

    Izzy Castillo was crowned Miss Gardner-Webb on March 24. She also won Most Photogenic and Miss Congeniality. Castillo, of Canton, Ga., is a junior elementary education major. Her talent was a country line dance to Footloose. She received a crown, sash, roses and $300.

    A successful vocalist on the stage and in film, Indra Thomas, will be the next guest in the Gardner-Webb University Distinguished Artist Series. Before giving her concert on April 4, at 7 p.m. Thomas will lead a soprano vocal masterclass that morning from 9:25 to 10 a.m. Both programs will be held in Dover Chapel.

    Kim Randolph Rivera, Class of ’84, serves on the Gardner-Webb University Alumni Board. Knowing that her class would be celebrating its 40th reunion in May 2024, Rivera wondered if anybody ever held college reunions like they do for high school.

    After a national search process, Gardner-Webb President Dr. William M. Downs has named one of its own, GWU Associate Coach Jeremy Luther as the head coach of the men’s basketball program. In his 11 seasons at GWU, Luther contributed a wealth of knowledge and played a vital part of the program’s 188 wins. Luther also helped lead the program to its first NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament in 2018-2019.

    The Godbold College of Business is hosting a day of business pitch competitions on April 24. Activities begin at 9 a.m. in Hamrick Hall’s Blanton Auditorium on the Gardner-Webb University campus. The event includes the second annual Dawg House Pitch competition for GWU students and the Pitch Contest for high school students sponsored by the Cleveland County Chamber.

    Gardner-Webb Assistant Professor Dr. Wilson Hawkins Receives President’s Early Career Award

    Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William M. Downs has announced the recipient of the President’s Early Career Award for 2024. Receiving the honor is Dr. Wilson Hawkins, assistant professor of physics and director of the GWU Honors Program. Since Hawkins’ arrival to the University in 2021, he has demonstrated productivity in scholarship, creative discovery, and instruction that exceeds expectations. He also continues to pursue professional development and serve the campus community.
