Shaping the Future: Ignite Scholar Annali Silver Seeks to Inspire Rural Students Through History

Annali Silver has been surrounded by all things Gardner-Webb since she was a youngster. Now, as a senior history education major, she praises the program and how it has allowed her to step into her dream of becoming a high school history teacher. Born and raised in Bakersville, N.C., Silver was often in the Boiling Springs area when she was a child visiting Flint Hill Church for Bible Drill Competitions that challenge students to memorize and locate scriptures.

Gardner-Webb Officials Announce Terri Williams as the New Women’s Basketball Head Coach

Gardner-Webb University Vice President and Director of Athletics Andrew T. Goodrich has announced Terri Williams as the new head coach of the Runnin’ Bulldogs women’s basketball program. Williams is a 30-year veteran with 17 years of experience as a Division I head coach.

On Double Dawg Day, Gardner-Webb Donors Smash Record by Giving Over $2.8 Million

For the 10th consecutive year, enthusiastic supporters of Gardner-Webb University not only surpassed—but more than doubled—the previous year’s record. For 24 hours Bo dressed to impress for Double Dawg Day. For 24 hours on April 10, Double Dawg Day, 1,354 donors answered the call and raised over $2.8 million.

Webbstock ’25 on Saturday, April 12, Brings Community Together for Afternoon of Entertainment

On Saturday, April 12, Main Street will close to traffic from College Avenue to Branch Street and open at 11 a.m. for Webbstock ’25. Along with free performances by four bands, the festival features vendors offering a variety of food options and selling specialty and handmade items.

Gardner-Webb Executive Chef Thomas Tessneer Selected for Aramark Culinary Excellence Competition

Gardner-Webb University Executive Chef Thomas Tessneer has been invited to participate in the 2025 Aramark Culinary Experience Competition. He will compete in the East Region cookout on April 22-23 against university chefs from North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Ten Students from Gardner-Webb Help with Rebuild Efforts in Waynesville and Fletcher, N.C.

Instead of traveling out-of-state this year, Neal Payne, Gardner-Webb associate minister to the University for Student Ministries, and 10 students from Gardner-Webb went to Black Mountain, N.C., to help rebuild homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Helene.

Gardner-Webb Senior-Level Nursing Students Attend Nurses’ Day at the Legislature

Gardner-Webb Senior Connor Settlemyre Performs with National Honor Band

As Gardner-Webb University senior Connor Settlemyre waited to perform with some of the best musicians from around the country, he looked up to see members of the audience seated directly above the stage, anticipating the music to begin. The performance was the culmination of three days of practice at the National Small Band Programs Intercollegiate Band, meeting in Fort Worth, Texas. In the previous 72 hours, the 106 people around him had become friends, and they were ready to present a stirring program of music.

Gardner-Webb Students Spread Joy to ‘Wish Families’ at Give Kids the World Village

A group of 12 students from Gardner-Webb University recently chose to spend their spring break volunteering and serving families at Give Kids the World Village (GKTW) in Kissimmee, Fla. The nonprofit resort provides critically-ill children and their families with weeklong wish vacations at no cost. Lodging, meals, snacks and entertainment are all included. Volunteers work in different areas to create treasured memories for the village’s special guests.

Gardner-Webb Alumna Chelsea Sexton Shares How Rejection Led to Acceptance

As she neared graduation from Gardner-Webb University in May 2023, Chelsea Sexton received the news that nobody wants to hear: she was turned down by the dental school she aspired to attend. A chemistry major whose dream of becoming a dentist began as a child, Sexton was crushed.

Spring Concert Includes Gardner-Webb Orchestra and Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra

The 50-member Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra (GSYO) will join the Gardner-Webb University Orchestra for a performance on April 15 at 7 p.m. in Dover Theater. They will perform individually and together the works of Resphighi, Mussorgsky, Ravel, and Sibelius.

Gardner-Webb Senior Connor Settlemyre Selected to Participate in National Band

Gardner-Webb University senior Connor Settlemyre, of Rutherfordton, N.C., has been selected to perform for the National Small Band Programs Intercollegiate Band. He is the first student from GWU to be selected for this honor. The concert, which features 124 musicians, is held in conjunction with the 2025 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association on March 26-29 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Gardner-Webb Students Participate in 2025 Ethics Bowl Sponsored by North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities

Gardner-Webb University students from across campus competed recently in the 2025 North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Ethics Bowl. Teams from 19 schools participated in his year’s event that explored ethical questions related to health and wellness. The two-day event was held in the North Carolina Legislative Building and Legislative Office Building in Raleigh.

Double Dawg Day Donations in 2024 Help Support Research by Gardner-Webb Students

On Double Dawg Day in 2024, the College of Health Sciences led the day in the number of donors who gave to its academic programs. The funds they raised are benefiting students in the Hunt School of Nursing, the Department of Exercise Science and the Department of Psychological Science. In addition to purchasing new equipment, contributions on Double Dawg Day support student research, inquiry and presentation skills.

Gardner-Webb and Foothills Workforce Development Board Leaders Sign Partnership Agreement

Gardner-Webb University officials and leaders of the Foothills Workforce Development Board signed a partnership agreement on March 19. The Board’s mission is to facilitate the delivery of workforce development programs in McDowell, Rutherford, Cleveland and Polk counties and to provide scholarships to students in those counties who need skills for the workforce.

Dr. Doris Banner, Founding Editor and Researcher for the First Gardner-Webb Faculty Emeriti Publication, Passed Away on March 19

Dr. Doris Banner, an educator for over four decades, including more than 30 years at Gardner-Webb University, passed away March 19, 2025 in Rising Star, Texas. Banner was the founding editor and research director for the inaugural GWU Faculty Emeriti publication. She was also named to the University’s Gallery of Distinguished Alumni in 2003.
