Her living and learning experience in the Nation’s Capital met her goal, providing her with many opportunities to make new friends and connections around the world.

Gardner-Webb Alumna Aliah Price Turned Internship at Starbucks Headquarters into a Job Offer

Aliah Price graduated from Gardner-Webb University in 2019 prepared for her next step: graduate school at N.C. State University. Through this opportunity, she was invited to attend the National Black MBA (Master of Business Administration) Conference. Many high-profile companies offered internship opportunities, but only one would develop her skills and satisfy her caffeine cravings. She applied and was accepted for an internship at Starbucks Headquarters in Seattle, Wash.

Gardner-Webb Undergraduate and Graduate Students Present Research in Annual Event

Gardner-Webb University students will present their undergraduate and graduate research on March 4 at the annual Life of the Scholar-Multidisciplinary Conference (LOTS-MC). The event begins at 8:30 in Stewart Hall, Tucker Student Center, with remarks by Professor of English and Director of Undergraduate Research Dr. June Hobbs, Digital Scholarship and User Experience Librarian Holly Mabry and Professor of English Dr. Shea Stuart.

GWU Library Dean and Archivist Leads Preservation of 1967 Mural in Dover Center

A 33-foot mural depicting the history of textiles—familiar to generations of Gardner-Webb students—was recently removed from the Hoyt Bailey Dining Room in Gardner-Webb University’s Dover Campus Center. The mural has been stored in an environmentally-controlled space in Dover Library and will be reinstalled later in the University’s new Welcome and Admissions Center.

Dr. Natalie Edwards Bishop Promoted to Dean of Gardner-Webb’s Dover Library

Gardner-Webb Sells Tickets for Hercules Tires Big South Basketball Championships

Fans of the Runnin’ Bulldogs have plenty to celebrate with the start of March Madness and the upcoming Hercules Tires Big South Basketball Championships. The Gardner-Webb women’s team has already clinched the Big South regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament, and the men’s team enters the final stretch of the season with some solid wins.

GWU English Department Hosts Award-Winning Author for Foothills Writers Day

Award-winning author and Shelby, N.C., native, Joanna Pearson, will be on the Gardner-Webb campus on March 20 for Foothills Writers Day. Her visit includes an evening presentation open to the public as well as a session with the high school students who are finalists of the Foothills Writers Contest (details below). The event is hosted by the University’s Department of English Language and Literature, the Broad River Review, the Darlene J. Gravett Visiting Writer Series and the Life of the Scholar Program.

Doug Armstrong, ’88, Excelled with Support of GWU’s Blind and Visually Impaired Program

Doug Armstrong graduated cum laude in 1988 from Gardner-Webb University. A student in the blind and visually impaired program, he had earned two degrees in mathematics and computer science with a minor in political science. Armstrong had planned to pursue a job in software engineering and development, but a revelation from his family history inspired him to take a different path. He decided to become a lawyer and use his analytical and problem-solving skills to protect people and their rights.

Gardner-Webb Offers Cybersecurity Major Online and Face-to-Face

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of individuals employed within the cybersecurity sector is slated to grow 31% by the year 2029, which far exceeds the average for all other occupations. In anticipation of the demand for these jobs, Gardner-Webb University is introducing a cybersecurity major in the traditional undergraduate (TUG) program and Gardner-Webb Online.

Gardner-Webb University officials have announced that Sharon Hammonds of Roebuck, S.C., is the new associate vice president for Human Resources (HR). Hammonds has 18 years of experience in HR in corporate and higher education settings. She begins her duties at GWU on Feb. 21.

Gardner-Webb and the Town of Boiling Springs Welcome Music and More for Webbstock ’23

Gardner-Webb University and the Town of Boiling Springs are hosting five bands at Webbstock ’23 on Saturday, April 22, from 1 to 10 p.m. Main Street will be closed to traffic during the festival. In addition to live music, the event features a kids zone on the lawn in front of GWU’s Noel Hall, local artisans, street vendors, and performances by local groups. The best news—there’s no cost to attend.

The Gardner-Webb University Student Government Association is hosting its first “Run for the Heart 5k” during Family Weekend on Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. February is American Heart Month, and this 5k will serve as a chance for families, students, staff, faculty and members of the community to come together and bring awareness to the importance of heart health.

The Gardner-Webb University Office of Alumni Relations has planned a full week for HOOPSCOMING in February. Alumni, former athletes, and friends are invited to return to campus for two special events on Feb. 11 and 18.
“We are eager to have our alumni and friends back in Paul Porter Arena for Hoopscoming 2023,” asserted Director of Alumni Relations Leah Clevenger. “For our athletes, there is nothing better than having a packed house! The school spirit and energy that our alumni and friends bring, particularly our basketball and cheer alumni, make for an exciting atmosphere for our Runnin’ Bulldogs. We want to see everyone in their red, black, and bulldog for Hoopscoming on Feb. 11 as well as Legacy & Legends on Feb. 18.”

Javonda Adams, ’22, Honors Her Black History and Culture Every Day

Maya Angelou is one of Javonda Adams’ heroes, and the above quote one of her favorites. Adams, an alumna of Gardner-Webb University, is inspired by the famous poet’s strong mindset and personality. “(She) helped me stand firm and keep moving,” Adams remarked. “Whenever life throws me curveballs, I still rise and keep moving.”

Greene Lectureship Features Dr. Danny West, Recently Retired from Gardner-Webb

Dr. Danny West, who recently retired from Gardner-Webb, is the guest speaker for the C.O. and Eliza Greene Lectureship on March 7 at the University. His topic for the two sessions will be “Preaching as the Task of Sacred Relinquishment,” allowing the sacred text to provide the primary voice for the sermon. There is no cost to attend and the event is open to pastors, students and lay persons.

Gardner-Webb Provost Announces New Executive Director of Student Success Division

Dr. Ryan W. Erck, of Waco, Texas, a higher education practitioner and researcher focused on student engagement and learning, has been named the executive director of Gardner-Webb University’s Student Success Division. He was chosen after a national search by a campus search committee, and officially begins his duties on Jan. 30. He reports directly to Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Karen Aubrey.

Gardner-Webb Joins National Observance of Black History Month

The National Theme for Black History Month 2023 is Black Resistance, which celebrates the stories of how African Americans have mobilized for freedom and justice through the years. Gardner-Webb University’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion Lawrence Brinson has planned events to recognize and honor the contributions of African Americans to society both in the United States and worldwide.

Winter Family Weekend at Gardner-Webb Connects Families to the Undergraduate Experience

Winter Family Weekend (Feb. 10-12) at Gardner-Webb University offers a chance for families to experience life on campus and cheer on the Runnin’ Bulldogs in tennis, softball and basketball. Along with having fun, families are invited to celebrate their students’ achievements. During the weekend, a reception will honor students on the President’s and Dean’s Lists, and the Senior Pinning will be held on Sunday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb President Dr. William Downs Selected as Vice President of Big South Executive Committee

Big South Conference Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander announced Wednesday (Jan. 18) that Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William Downs has been selected to serve as Big South Vice President of the Executive Committee. Since September 2022, Downs has served on the Executive Committee as at At-Large Member.
By serving in this leadership role, Downs elevates Gardner-Webb’s involvement and commitment to the Big South Conference and its student-athletes.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools’ Interim Superintendent is a Gardner-Webb Alumna

Dr. Crystal L. Hill became interim superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools (CMS) on Jan. 1, only seven months after she was hired as CMS Chief of Staff. Hill has 25 years of experience in education, which includes earning her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Gardner-Webb University.
