    Homecoming 2023 at Gardner-Webb University features three days of festivities Oct. 27-29 to welcome alumni and celebrate the GWU student-experience. The events will also usher in a new era with the first concert in the Gardner-Webb Brinkley Amphitheater on Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. Headlined by Grammy award-winner Ricky Skaggs and his band Kentucky Thunder, the performance will launch a venue that will host a variety of arts and entertainment for years to come.

    Gardner-Webb’s basketball teams will o!icially tipoff the new season on Tuesday, Oct. 24, as the ‘Dawgs host Bulldog Madness at 7 p.m. inside Paul Porter Arena. Doors open at 6 p.m., and admission is free to the general public.

    An annual fall tradition on the Gardner-Webb campus since 2005, Octoberfest will be held on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC). Joining the GWU campus as hosts for the second year are Ruby C. Hunt YMCA and the Town of Boiling Springs. All activities are free and open to the public.

    Members of the Broad River European Motor Club have two passions: sports cars and community service. Since 2016, club members have graciously provided several sports cars each year for the Homecoming parade at Gardner-Webb University.     A new study by Tourism Economics, which was commissioned by Visit Cleveland County, N.C., has documented and determined the economic impacts of four organizations, including Gardner-Webb University. The comprehensive report analyzed data from 2022 and concluded that GWU generated a total economic impact of $155.3 million in the local economy, was responsible for 1,315 full- and part-time jobs, and produced $8.0 million in tax revenues at the state and local levels.

    While exploring the Broad River, students at Gardner-Webb University might observe what looks like a rock, but it’s really a bivalved freshwater mussel or mollusk, points out Dr. David Campbell, associate professor of paleontology and chair of the Department of Natural Sciences. Clams and oysters are examples of bivalved mollusks, and he has studied various species of them since he was a senior in high school (35 years). His son, Timothy, a first-year Gardner-Webb student, is carrying on the tradition, and recently father and son presented their research at the international meeting on bivalves at Cambridge University in England.

Seven patients, who had eyeglass prescriptions less than a year old, also received free glasses.

    A 21-year-old college student is taking care of her younger siblings: a 2- year-old and 13-year-old twins. Their father is in jail, and the oldest child is trying to keep the bills paid and food on the table. Although this was a role-playing scenario in a Poverty Simulation at Gardner-Webb University, many low-income families are in similar circumstances.

    Basic Camp Provides Opportunity for Eligible Rising Juniors to Join Army ROTC at Gardner-Webb

    The Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) offers qualified rising juniors (for Fall 2024) an opportunity to enroll in the program at Gardner-Webb University. By attending one of the 30-day Basic Camps next summer at Fort Knox, Ky., students will become eligible to enroll in the final two-year Advanced Army ROTC program.
